I have read many posts about this on the VLC forums and eleswhere, and tried all sorts of combinations and my eventual solution was .....

to use the free JetAudio player (http://www.cowonamerica.com/download/) which worked first time and every time

Maybe not the answer you wanted, and if anybody has a better one I would love to hear it as I do like the VLC player

No despite the name of Jet Audio it plays all types of video files as well, and can even do some conversions without the paid extras
