stevehaigh
have you seen that super typoon Parma heading for the Philippines: "Tropical Storm force winds extended well over 300 kilometers (186 miles) -- far enough to include Manila". i feel really sorry for those people, its going to be devastating. can you imagine if something like that hit Thailand? with the standard of construction here, most of the buildings in the countryside and a good number in the cities would be levelled. it would make the tsunami look like a picnic. good we don't get that kind of weather here (yet!) LooseCannon
With the standard of construction in Thailand being very similar to that of the Philippines I would imagine that the damage would be very similar. Are you expecting it to be worse in Thailand?
webfact
Thailand is not within the Typhoon belt
IanForbes
Typhoons, Tsunamis and floods will always kill the unfortunate people living in marginal areas. It is just a fact of life. We haven't seen the last of disasters and they can happen anywhere.
Samuian
It depends on many, many particular factors, if much of these are right, the devastation and loss of life is exponential! Taifun Gay was mentioned already, I think Thailand is lucky in not having exposed coast lines as India, Bangla Desh, Philippines or Vietnam. If something like Sidr or Nargis ever makes it's landfall somewhere in the Chonburi Region.the devastation would be incredible. If I think just about these giant billboards along the highways in Bkk.... Supr Taifun Karen:here Right now the Philippines are bracing for "Parma": click here: Edited October 3, 2009 by Samuian
