Proposed Pattaya Bay Redevelopment

Recently a very large scale proposal was presented to executive members of Pattaya City Hall, regarding the total redevelopment of the whole length of Pattaya Bay. This grandiose plan was with particular emphasis on the area from Walking Street to the Sea Rescue Centre on the south side, and including the proposed new Boat Marina.

Friday 2nd October 2009 [PDN]: - In the large No.401 conference room at Pattaya City Hall a meeting attended by the Mayor Khun Itthiphol Kunplome and his executives, were presented with detailed plans for a full development of the foreshore from Walking Street around to the Sea Rescue Centre. The main theme behind this proposal was to dredge out the shallow areas in front of Walking Street and create a long sand island a few hundred metres off shore. This would have a connecting vehicle bridges at the northern & southern ends, facilities on the island, and the inshore lagoon could be used as an anchorage for small boats and / or swimming

In a simplified version of the above plan, the strip of sand was an extension of the shore from the southern edge of Walking Street, with only limited access from this southern end, but still having a vehicle bridge at the northern end. The Bali Hai Peir showed some extensions, but did not appear to have the capacity of the proposed new Boat Marina, and no breakwater on the seaward side, would see the same problems with sinking boats as we have recently witnessed in rough weather.

Further north these proposals included rectangular retaining walls, (with narrow sea access), to create large, calm swimming areas, and wide channels in between these would in many cases run right up to some of the hotels. Over these channels and along the entire length of Beach Road a whole new dual motorway is shown, thus making the beachfront a 2-way traffic system.

There plans allow for a modernisation of Walking Street and the adjacent foreshore areas, plus there is even provision for seagull nesting areas to entice birds back to Pattaya’s beaches. This huge redevelopment would make the Pattaya Bay beachfront area probably equal to anything in the world, but would require further planning, a financial plan and an environmental impact study.

This all sounds nice in theory but raises some very pertinent questions: -

1) The sheer cost of such a project would stretch the Pattaya City Hall budget beyond its limit at a time when the National Government has implemented financial cutbacks.

2) Will the large financial expenditure entice many more tourists and visitors into our city? – financial projections must be carefully made.

3) An environmental impact study is essential, because even a minor alteration to the foreshore can create either erosion or silting, and in the case of wildlife, - seabirds will not return when the local people continue to steal their eggs.

At least it should stop boats crashing into the Sea Food Restaurants, that is if City Hall has dropped it's plans to demolish all the building on the seaward side of the street. :)
