Embarassment At The Grocery Store

Recommended Posts

This afternoon I was shopping at the Emporium's grocery store. I got up to the cashier to check-out and there was a farang raising all sorts of hel_l because the customer service counter isn't a check-out counter. The geezer looked like some kind of over-the-hill hiker and I expected at anytime he would break out in a chorus of "The Happy Wanderer", which would have been a great improvement. He went on and on about the inconvenience for over 5 minutes. No one else even stood in line that long! I give credit to the Thai personnel. When they saw he wasn't going to let up, they silently ignored him as if they couldn't understand a word of English, although they did check him out at a check-out counter...silently...while looking straight ahead.

Although I couldn't quite determine if he was American, I was embarrassed that a Westerner would act that way. Who gives a dam_n if they check him out at the service counter where he is from? I hope he chokes on the food he was buying. Yanqui go home!

Couldn't have been American. There are no customer service counters at American grocery stores. Was it necessary to slip in your unfounded Yank bash anyway?

Have some compassion. The "geezer" may have Alzheimers or some kind of medical condition that makes him a crank.

Could be the infamous GOM, I believe he hangs around in The Emporium. :)

Not possible, he would've had to give up his seat :D

Yanqui go home!

So you don't know what country this guy is from, but the "Yanks" should all go home?

Hard to believe the mods let this kind of tripe go on and some even adding to it.

It is very oblivious a cheap shot at yanks.

Did you notice if they had any Scotch Eggs during your shopping trip? :)

Villa Ari has them, but they are something like 75 baht each.

From the OP's description it sounds as if the original GOM is younger. He could look like a rambler but more like a golfer. However, I wouldn't doubt for a second that he'd complain about something like that - he's the perfect example of a "not fitting in to local ways" bloke.

Please enlighten me on GOM.

Ask CarlBKK for a link to the topic. See above. Stormtrooper taking crap avatar.

Hilarious the first 20 pages.

My thoughts also.

Okay guys...calm down. I am a yank! You misinterpreted my point...which was that when Thais see this kind of display of behavior and are clearly appalled, I wonder how many have the I wish those Westerners would just go home.

I guess I need to clarify a bit further the purpose of my OP.

Those of us who are westerners and yanks...and that includes me...are affected by the behavior of all westerners/yanks. Maybe that's not the way it should be, but it's human nature to lump people together into groups. My point was that I wish other westerners/yanks would consider the example they are setting and how their behavior is often generalized to all.

Incidentally, as to the subject in question -- wore some kind of gloves with the fingers cut off.

Not sure about everywhere in the US, but all the larger grocery stores in my experience have had customer service counters where overflow customers are sometimes rung out. Usually doubles as a Western Union and lottery ticket sales point too.

I think the "non compos mentis" diagnosis is most apt from the behavior described, but it's certainly possible for him to have had a memory of being rung out at a customer service counter back home. Considering his approach, he may have been shuttled to quite a few of them just to get him out of the store.

How about it CarlBKK?

Use the search function on the forum for GOM, you should be able to find it. It was a classic thread.

Tried that but only got a couple of nods towards it. Not the actual thread. :)

While I hate to side with the poster known as "phetaroi" on any issue (just as they are most likely not thrilled either :) ).

Given some foreigners actions here I can say without a shadow of a doubt :

I am and always will be proud to be an American BUT, sometimes I'm embarrassed to be a foreigner :D .

Before you open it I hope you have a lot of time, a comfy chair and a takeaway nearby. It's a long read.
