Cuddling bikers slam into pole

They were travelling at some speed and owning to this ridiculous seating arrangement the rider did not have full control of the steering column

Later at 5.20am, the same Police Sub-Lieutenant Natapong Chaadopaamai, inquiry sub-inspector at Soi 9 Stationhouse, received a call about a bike accident on Soi 17, South Pattaya.

The officer went along to the location with the Sawang Boriboon and saw a man in pain lying on the ground next to an unconscious woman. She was examined immediately and medics discovered that she had broken a leg and sustained serious head injuries. While the Sawang Boriboon organised getting the injured pair to hospital, the police sub-inspector began interviewing witnesses at the scene. It was learned that the man had been the driver of the vehicle and the woman had been riding up front with the man's arms around her. They were travelling at some speed and owing to this ridiculous seating arrangement the rider did not have full control of the steering column and was unable to make a sharp turn when he needed to. The bike then slammed into an electricity pole. To make matters worse, neither of the two had been wearing helmets at the time.

Both were taken to Banglamung Hospital where the man was identified as Grysawntong Ratcome, 25. There was no ID found on the woman.

Dave - Figured as much when I read the article. I've seen some stupid antics on motor bikes far worse than described above. Waste of life. :o

Don't you find though that the longer you stay here the less it affects you? :D

The wife and I always used to sit by her in the FLB, She really was a lovely quiet girl, She'd worked there for about 5 years.

Thats one thing about living here we have to get used to i'm afraid. :D

It certainly does harden you - just bound to! I wish there was a lesson to be learned but we all know it will likely happen again. And with Songkran around the corner.... :o

I saw something pretty unbelievable on Pattaya Thai last night. A motorcyclist was riding while carrying a small baby, about 3-months old, I estimate. He had him / her balanced across his arms - there were just the two of them on the bike. Any sudden maneouver and the kid would have been on the floor! The only thing that I can say in this lunatic's favour is that he was going relatively slowly.

How long haveyou been here?Don't you know Thais hang babies from mocys aslucky charms to prevent them from having accidents. Most of the time if you see a mocy going the wrong way down a road at night without lights, there's a little child somewhere amoung the four or five on it.In this country if they have a child balanced precariously on their bikes they don't ride a bit more carefully. They are crazier than ever.

I must admit, for me it’s the worse part of living here. I really can’t understand why the Police don’t enforce decent driving/riding. For sure they would make a fortune and save lives.

I have a long-term friend in Pattaya and have helped her many times over the years but I made it crystal clear to her, if she has an accident, not wearing her helmet, she’s on her own! Would I help her, I just don’t know, but I hope it makes her consider her own safety. Yeah I know I’m p1ssing in the wind. :D

Makes me livid, the waste of so many young people in such a way! :o

Thais don't posess the fear of having an accident because if they die, they'll just believe it was their own fate, their time to go, so to speak.

Sad really.

I think your sarcasm is uncalled for.

I have been here a little while now and yes, I have seen four-on-a bike, no lights, wrong way etc. on plenty of occasions. I never cease to be amazed at the cavalier attitude to safety that most Thai drivers seem to have - I agree with DJP, it's a fatalistic mentality that is linked to the Buddhist religion. When it's your turn ... karma!

Having said that, what I witnessed on Pattaya Tai set a new standard in stupidity - for me, at least. No doubt some of you out there have seen worse.

I saw (and i think this may top the bill here) in Kanchanaburi about 2 years ago a man riding down the road on his motor bike holding a 3-4 year old kid by one leg upside down with the childs head inches from the road, both of whom were laughing and having a great ole time of it, i could not believe my eyes whilst at same time not being in the least bit surprised that someone could behave in such a stupid way. The kid did seem to be enjpying itself a lot though, it was deffinately giggling from pleasure not fear. This is a true story!
