Gonorrhoea on rise in North

Published on Oct 14, 2003

The number of young adults infected with gonorrhoea in Chiang Mai is on the rise because they frequently change sexual partners and seldom use condoms, a doctor said yesterday.

Dr Wirat Klinbuayaem, a doctor from Sankampaeng Hospital, said the government's social-order policy had successfully curbed the number of sexual services for sale. It has, therefore, become more difficult for young people to buy sex.

"Young people with naturally high sexual desires responded to their natural instincts by having sex within their own groups and changing partners often. They do not use condoms because they say they trust their partners,'' he said.

The number of new HIV/Aids cases in Chiang Mai has declined, but cases in Bangkok and the Eastern provinces are on the rise because of the working habits of prostitutes, he added.

"Many prostitutes have left Chiang Mai to find new markets in Bangkok,'' the doctor said.

That definitely gives one something to think about. Quite a few thai guys I know rarely use condoms (I know this from conversations, not experience   :o ). When they do use one it's from fear of getting the girl pregnant and not from catching something.

Gonerrhea and chlamydia are quite nasty stds some people have obvious symptoms others don't - so you can be infected and not even know. Left untreated in can cause prostate infections in men and more seriously PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) in women. This is one of the main causes of infertility and ectopic pregnancy.

Best to play it safe and cover up the big (or little) fella    :D
