When I was a kid, we had the old fashioned red firecrackers that came in a bundle and you either lit off the whole string or carefully pulled them off and lit them one by one with a mosquito coil or incense stick.

My kids are now playing with the newest generation of cheaper, but more high-tech fire crackers that have a much louder 'crack'. They come with no fuse......you simply strike them on the box like a match box and have a one or two second delay before the 'crack'. Worst of all is that they are cheaper than the old fashioned ones and therefore more kids making more noise. box of 50 for 10thb

THANKS AGAIN CHINA!!!!

Well, I guess its more appropriate to thank the Thai Customs Dept for allowing the import of firecrackers from China. Dont you think so jaideeguy.

I agree! Thanks again China! BUT, I really mean it...

I love firecrackers. I always loved them when I was a kid - and in that respect I am still a kid. Where in Bangkok can you buy these new generation firecrackers?

We're from up north and the wife says they are smuggled across the border....Maesai. Altho illegal by Thai law the local shops sell them out the back door.

Wish all Chiang Mai's stock were available in BKK, as the noise wouldn't be too much of an intrusion as it is here in the quiet rice fields of CM.

That sounds like a quick way to have three fingers on your match striking hand.

Or at least a nasty burn.

All in good fun!

Yeah, same same every year and the season is just starting up here.....Loy katrong, xmas, new yrs, chineese new yrs, songkran....any excuse to make noise and/or maim yourself or others.

Last year, a close relative 8 yrs old had some other kid drop a cracker into his pocket full of fireworks. sounds funny?/ not to the kid with scars and i rushed him into the hospital, but he is back at it again......FUN FUN FUN!!

This kind of fire cracker has been on sale since I was like 15. it's really nice if you throw it into shallow water and it will create a little fountain when it bursts. Or better still, we used to throw it into some holes in the ground and see plumes of dust shooting upwards.

I need to get my hands on it, reminds me of my childhood.

Sounds like another real good reason for the authorities to ban alcohol over Loy Kratong. Or is it banned anyway, Buddhist festival and all that? I haven't read anything for a while from the anti-booze faction.

I am assuming the appearance of these things is linked to the (once) peacefule festival of the full moon in November.

Seriously though, what with the almost non-existant police and/or parental control over the use (abuse) of fireworks in Thailand this is a serious issue. And that's before the booze fueled farangs start their stupidity, leading once more by "example".

I used to like firecrackers until I went to Suzhou-China for Chinese New Year a couple of years ago. For what seemed like two weeks(actually 10 days), I heard firecrackers and other fireworks continuously exploding. There was no lull or respite from the incessant sounds, even into the wee hours of the morning. It was driving me mad and it was next to impossible to fall asleep. The GF was fine with it as she is Chinese and grew up with it I guess.

I lived in China (Qingyuan and Zhuhai) for a few years. And since I'm in Thailand this is one of the very few things that I am missing... I just love fireworks - and the noisier the better!

Everyone is different - some people like booze...I don't - some people hate firecrackers....I don't. Am I happy that we are not all the same!

I thought most of fireworks were illegal in thailand.I never forget the picture on the front page of one of the major thai newspapers some 15 year ago.

A car filled with illegal fireworks had exploded somewhere on the bagna-thrat highway and they published a foto of the driver of the car. That means his shoes with only his black burned feet still inside.
