A 33-year-old woman from Phitsanulok was arrested at Jomtien Beach on Monday night by tourist police and charged with procuring sex for money for her 14-year-old daughter.

Police had been made aware of the woman’s activities in Jomtien and organized a sting whereby an undercover officer made overtures to the woman regarding the cost of sexual favours with her daughter.

The woman negotiated a figure of 2,000 baht and the undercover officer handed over the money. Once this transaction took place the tourist police moved in and took both mother and daughter into custody.

At the police station the woman said she had come to Rayong and collected money from a company for whom she used to work and had then gone with her daughter to stay in a hotel in Jomtien. After a period of time the woman had run out of money and was wondering how she would get enough cash to be able to return to Phitsanulok.

She then hit upon the really bright idea of selling her daughter for sex with strangers. The mother has been charged and will face court while her daughter has been sent to the Maha Thai shelter on Sukhumvit road.

Actually I know two ladies who have just sent their 18/19 year old daughters to Hong Kong for that very reason.

We got a phone call yesterday saying that one of the girls went with a guy who gave her 7k baht for the night and she promptly stole his mobile phone. The police are now involved and the daughter is in big trouble. Guess what? the mother is totally p1ssed with the daughter now as she has lost her income I repeat

C'mon, Pat- you should know better- when this is going on the police are IN on it, more often than not. Not surprising at all if they're not doing anything about it.

While I'm happy to see someone finally addressing the criminal supply-side of this problem, I'm no less cynical- I'm sure this wasn't any real operation, probably this woman wasn't paying the police's normal cut for running her business- and the feel-good publicity is just a fringe benefit.

Huh ? Both the mother & the customer are criminals - both are guilty.

As always in these cases - the person caught has a 'reason' for doing what they did. She told the police she was desperate - more than likely to try to gain some sympathy off them. I'm not buying it.

Ran out of money - couldn't get home... this is no excuse for selling your daughter, desperate or not.

How about the mother getting a job instead of selling her daughter ? Wouldn't that be a better way to get the bus fare home ?

Lets face it guys Thailand is no place to be female. This is one of those things I really don't know about, but there seems to be a very very very long history, of the have nots giving thier daughters to the haves, long before farrangs ever were on the scene. I don't know that to be fact, but some how I think it is probably true.

Not for me to judge all I can do is stay away from underage hookers.

That does not mean that it think it is a good thing, I don't. But I'm not Thai and I don't walk in thier shoes.
