19 October, 2009, [PDN]: one of Pattaya’s latest tourist attractions, Pattaya Floating Market, is once again receiving bad press due to the recent spate of thefts from customers’ vehicle parked in the market’s parking lots. Police warned the management of the Floating Market to pay more attention and be more responsible regarding their security arrangements.

Pattaya Floating Market, since its opening, has proved to be one of Pattaya’s most popular tourist attractions drawing customers nationwide, but its security record is obviously in need of radical improvement. The latest incident happened at 1.30 pm on 18 October 2009, Lieutenant Wichai Boonprasit, [27] from Nakornratchasima complained to the police at Dongtan Police Station that his car window had been smashed while he was wandering around the shops in the market.

Lieutenant Wichai said he had parked his Honda Civic car in the parking lot and when he returned from shopping with his girlfriend, he found that the car window had been smashed and he had lost a mobile phone, a gold pendent, some cash and 4 ATM cards, totalling several tens of thousands of baht.

Apparently , when Wichai asked about the responsibilities of the staff and demanded some reasonable attention regarding the theft, they just ignored him and showed no interest in helping him, whatsoever.

In the previous spate of thefts reported on PDN on 18 April 2009, the three robberies from cars occurred in a large empty expanse of land which was being utilised as a parking area for the market. The problem is that while there is a parking lot immediately in front of the market, this rapidly becomes full, forcing customers to park in the several extra car parks; however, these are not patrolled adequately. A previous theft victim said at the time that he was very disappointed by the lack of safety and security services provided by the market.

In the latest incident, Police Lieutenant Colonel Apichet Katsomboon, Dontan Police Station filed the complaint and a search will be made for the thieves in the hope of being able to prosecute them.

I wonder how responsive the staff would be if the Lieutenant brought a few of his collegues to "discuss" the situation with the folk at the floating markets?

If he left that kind of stuff on display then som nam na. Basic and obvious rules apply for occupying this planet nowadays. No wonder the staff had little sympathy.

I wish it were otherwise.
