It looks to be a screen caused by your video card.

I would try removing the card and re-seating it, but before doing that, I would clean the contact edge with a pencil eraser.

If that doesn't help, try swapping the existing video card out with another one.

Had the exact same happen to me, but it was gradual, screen going a greenish purple colour over a couple of weeks.

Cleaned and slaved in new cards, no difference, in the end bit the bullet and bought a new screen which isnt that expensive these days, no problems for 3 months now.

This was instant, , it usually happens at the windows 7 login screen

This laptop has been launched from a desk about 8 months ago, a new screen was installed, plus HD, plus keyboard, it could be the new screen!!??

possible video card overheating or it just died

Seems like here told, looks like a current overheating and or screen resolutions and card/ card settings can't cope. Could also be related to the card driver and current settings of the card. Did you overclock your card or CPU or both?

Just restarted and got the 'starting windows' screen, it has stopped on that screen with blue lines running down the side of the screen, this leads me to believe it's something much more serious than a screen problem...

I'm getting more convinced that it's your video card, and that is (probably) a less serious problem than your screen going on you. I say probably because high-end video cards can cost considerably more than a new monitor, but you don't strike me as a very high-tech guy, so it's probably a low-end video card that would be fairly cheap rto eplace. The other possiblility is that you are using an on-board video card (part of the motherboard) and that may indicate that you are having some difficultie with your M/B.

Try re-booting in the "safe mode" if you can. Once you can get to a normal screen either in safe mode or normal boot, click on "my computer". Right click on the "c:/", click on "properties", open on "tool tab", select "error checking". It'll tell you it will perform the operation at next start up. Select "automatic repair and any other box you can select. Then say "yes". Then close any open windows and re-boot. It'll take some time but should fix your problem and any corrupted files. If you are still having a problem then it is a hardware issue. Remember after rebooting you need to let it do the complete repair. There are 5 steps and it will take time depending how big your hard drive is.

Good luck.

I'd say I'm in between beginner and geek, the thing is though, this laptop was given to me after it had been launched off a desk, taken for repair by the culprit, and just handed over to me so I've got no idea what components are inside, I just turned it on and used the thing :)

I done a clean install of Windows 7 build 7068(or is that 6087...) and it's nearly finished, I've had no dodgy screens in the few restarts it has done for the installation, I'll let that finish then I'll try error checking, thanks Mrjlh for the suggestion

Good to hear...

Seems like it was just the drivers...

Its always a good idea to know what hardware is in your box.... and keep your drivers up to date :)

I haven't done a single thing to install drivers, after the windows 7 update I haven't had to do anything at all, I suppose they were still in there from before...

Now I'm getting messages like this...

post-78826-1257257532_thumb.jpg

I know it's a uTorrent error message but I've been getting similar messages with whatever programs I've used :)

Any more ideas?

That could look like a faulty hard drive, did it just start appearing all of a sudden, or did you move some things around or something?

I've done several things to the computer since I got it but I don't think these problems started directly after one of my cleans or moves of data, the computer was dropped off a desk in its early life and had to have a new screen, HDD & keyboard fitted, the screen has always had a slight problem - flicking from low light to bright light but only very slightly, I'm quite sure that is just a screen issue but the error message is confusing...
