just wondering...knocked my socks off and the Mona Lisa was on the same wall just a few meters away; a postcard POS...

I had read about and seen the painting before in books but was unprepared for the scale; hopeless men...bigger than me! I have bought a print to hang on my shophouse wall and tried to explain to my wife...next time I leave for work she'll probably remove it; not wanting to have the image next to images of HRH and Buddha...

anybody?

The Pogues evidently liked it.

I've never seen it in the flesh, so to speak, but from what I have seen it conveys a strong sense of despair and yet hope but then I'm no aesthete (I can just about run across the road). Not too sure I'd like it on my wall.

the Pogues?...well, Sean-whats-his-face wasn't half bad...reminds me of meself when I was his age except that my teef are better...

but...what about the display angle?...the wife wouldn't want it near the house shrine and the kids probably wouldn't want to watch videos with me any more...but, I gots to have it to remind meself of human frailty...things get mixed up when there's too much vodka around... :)

While I wouldn't call the Mona Lisa a POS, (Over-hyped? Yes, but it really does have a lot of merit), I agree with you that both the size and content of The Raft of the Medusa hits you like a load of bricks when seen "live". The sad thing is that because of its proximity to the Mona Lisa, it isn't given the appreciation it deserves.

I couldn't believe the almost fighting throngs surrounding the Mona Lisa, I think it needs its own room so that it's not such a distraction.

yeah...I had thought that the Mona Lisa had it's own room provided since my last visit because of security problems...dumbshit islamists disapprove of such images and want to do damage...

the Raft should have it's own room with a lounging area...better than standing in front with yer gob hanging open...I did look around to see if other viewers were as struck as I was...there were plenty, standing with their mouths open...

now waiting for the delivery of the print to my PO box in Suphan and waiting to see what the customs damage will be; they'll probably remove it from the shipping tube to inspect for 'inappropriate' content and will probably be confused...ye wanna say 'hey, relax...it's OK to be despairing when there is no hope...it's not a loss of face issue...'

have been there once..but cannot remember it..

Actually, any works in Musée du Louvre is g-r-e-a-t

yeah...a person can easily spend a week at the Louvre...just like it's easy to spend a week at the anthropological Museum in Mexico City...never been to Florence; that one must be a monster... :)

I get your point, it's the sort of painting you want on the wall of your den, your own personal retreat, someplace you can go in, shut the door, pour yourself a slug of the hard stuff and contemplate the frailties of life and get things into perspective.

I know it's a bit sacreligious (sp?) but if you are worried about losing contact with your kids why not put a curtain or screen in front of it to be drawn aside late evening when you are in one of those melancholy moods.

yeah...well, it's gonna cost what the print's worth to mount and hang the mother so maybe I should get an arrangement that I can reverse to the wall...but its 1.5 x 1 meter... :)

just picked up the print from the post office today...bought from art.com; 56 x 42 inches, USD179.99 + 7.99 shipping, didn't pay no thai VAT or duty... the wife wanted to have a look so we unrolled it on the floor; she was confused (as I expected) and wondered why anyone would want to have an image of dying, shipwrecked men without hope...I said 'that was me before I met you darling,...you saved me and gave me new life...and I want to remember, etc...'

it's all true, but of course I did manage to score sum points anyway... :D

now to go down to BKK and get it matted and framed...coincides nicely as we're about to paint the walls of my downstairs shophouse 'den' a nice oyster latex to match the floor tiles...should brighten things up right smart... :)

classic world cinema videos to left, masterpieces of world lit to the right and a magnificent reproduction of french romanticism prominent in the middle...I'm as happy as a pig in shit... :D

I first heard about it in the book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, which I highly recommend. I looked up the story of the raft and was enthralled. I would like to see the picture in real life.

Never been to the Louvre. Would love to go tho.

Can't you get it matted and framed a little closer to home tutsi?

Posted

nah...even in changwat suphan all they got is appliance stores an' farm equipment dealers...it's gonna need a professional to mat it right so that it can be hanged properly...

we got the shipping box from the fridge that we just bought an' the wife was eyeing up a home made approach but I said nah, if we messed it up there'd be no recovery...I hate goin' to the smoke for the single purpose but it's gotta be done right...could maybe send it to a framing place an' just tell them t'get on with it, I suppose...forego the usual selection of options, etc...

just finished the new paint in my downstairs shophouse lair an' the wall where I want to hang it fairly breathes 'give the raft to me'...

Arthur, it's worth the trip to Paris just to see the original, take it from me :)

I obviously saw it a few times but it didn't make an everlasting impression. It reminded me of Copley's (earlier) "Watson and the Shark".

FYI, there is a bas relief of the painting at at Gericalut's grave in the amazing Pere Lachaise cemetery.

My Paris favs: Musee Marmottan and Musee Rodin.

That's what I mentioned, it is about hopelessness and hope, the human spirit will carry us through the most hopeless of situations and we will overcome that which we fear the most.

Well ~ 10% of us anyway, after resorting to cannibalism. :)
