Driving Phuket To Krabi

Featured Replies

I am bringing my family to Thailand for 10 days, then they go back to Australia and I head to Chiang Mai for my annual motorcyle holiday...

We have 5 nights booked in Phuket, and 5 Nights in Krabi, flights to and from HKT.

I was thinking it would be easiest to hire a Mini Van (there are 5 of us) in Phuket, and drive to Krabi, so we can get around under our own steam...

Is there any website that details the trip??? Which road (numbers) and where the ferries are???

Do you just queue up and drive onto the ferries and pay onboard once underway??? How many ferries and how much???

I will have a Garmin GPS with Thai Streetmaps V9, but still like to know where I am going and what to expect...

I searched here and couldn't find a thread about the trip (well not from the last 2 years anyway)... Is there another site that will answer my questions...

Cheers,

Daewoo

Check into a van with driver, not that much more money.Let the Thai guy take care of the driving.

i would hire a Toyota Fortuna, (enough room for 8), get a map and follow that.

It is very, very easy as there's really only 1 road that goes from Phuket to Krabi. Krabi is well signposted and the roads are great.

No boats needed, just make sure you stop at the gas station in Phagn Nga for a bottle of Orangina and a tuna sandwich.........no journey is complete without that.

Enjoy!!!

I have been looking into the hire car options... they aren't cheap, but the freedom is worth it... most hassles when travelling are around organising transport, and the thought of dragging my mum (65) and my sons (3 and 5) on some bus isn't real appealing...

We will probably get a 7 or 8 seater so we can take others with us when we go touring... the best part of travelling is always meeting other people... sightseeing just isn't my thing...

I don't know why I got it in my head that I needed two ferries to get to Krabi... I should have just googled to route and I would have known... I haven't explored much of Southern Thailand as motorbikes seem to always drag me into the moutains up north...

The only reason I would hire a driver would be for a tour guide to talk to, and translate, I can speak, read and write Thai but I only use it for a couple of weeks a year, so it takes me until about day 13 to remember even the basics... Ideally I would find a young mum to join our family with her own kids and make an adventure for all of us out of it...

Thanks for taking the time to reply... if you have any must sees for the trip, please let me know... Phom mai khawp ahaan talae (I don't like seafood), so I will have to pass on the tuna sandwhich...

Cheers,

Daewoo

If driving from Phuket to Krabi you will not be taking any ferries - the road from Phuket to Krabi is very straightforward and is actually quiet a good one, difficult to get lost or miss it since it's really the only road and heavily sign posted.

I have done the drive from Phuket to Krabi a couple of times now, it is very easy and well signposted the whole way, you can leave your GPS at home even. But if you want someone who knows the area to drive you around in Krabi to show you the sights then that is understandable. You could always drive yourself from Phuket to Krabi and then pickup a guide in Krabi to then drive you around the sights, save having to pay too much for the driver that way I would think.

Perhaps you were thinking of Koh Lanta --- its near Krabbi and requires 2 ferries, both fairly cheap and short.
