Thailand is a bird flu-free zone

BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s government is preparing to declare the country free from bird flu, after no new cases of bird flu were found in the last two areas under surveillance.

The two areas in the northern province of Utaradith, where many fowls had died in the past, have been closely monitored. But there have been no new deaths for sometime, the Departmet of Livestock Development Director General, Yukon Limlaemthong told

reporters on Tuesday.

The government now plans to declare every part of the country a “green zone” or no-outbreak area, Mr. Yukon said.

If there are no fresh outbreaks in the next six months, Thailand will definitely be an avian flu free-country, he said. This should help the exports of Thai chicken meat, he added.

There have been no reports of massive bird deaths in Thailand since 15 March according to government officials.

The livestock department and health ministry are still on alert and constantly monitoring to help prevent fresh outbreaks in chickens or humans.

The department must give permission for fowls to be transported from one area to another. The monitoring system at the country’s border check points will be rigorously maintained, as some neighbours -- Cambodia and Vietnams -- are still not free from bird flu.

Thailand has successfully curb the bird flu outbreak as local fowls farmers have strictly followed the government’s instructions on preventing the spread of the disease, according to the chairwoman of the Association of chicken and egg farmers, Chaveewan Kampa.

The numbers of fowls in each farm have been reduced to the levels that can easily be controlled. Farming standards have also been increased to meet official requirements.

Free from bird flu?.....and I suppose the Prime Minister has arranged for all birds flying into the country from Cambodia and Vietnam to report to immigration where visas will be granted depending on the length of stay :o

Ah!  So that is why I had to walk through a disinfectant bath when I entered

the Aviary at Khao Kiewo Zoo, Chonburi, today.

Thanks for letting me know.

No... that was just for the visitors that the zoo staff deemed unhygienic.... :D

*** sorry, couldn't resist *** :D

Seriously now, Thailand's reputation for being truthful about ANYTHING regarding bird flu was tarnished from the very beginning. Their hollow words of ressurance fall on deaf ears. :D:o
