Guys, sorry that this is so long but better than starting several threads…so step-daughter came back from the UK yesterday with her computer running like a dog! It’s a Dell Inspiration 6400.

Now I have run a program to see what/where/type of RAM she has and the details are.. Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB ,Currently Installed Memory: 1GB (two 512s), Available Memory Slots: 0, Total Memory Slots: 2, Dual Channel Support: Yes, CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel, CPU Family: Genuine Intel® CPU T2130 @ 1.86GHz Model 14, Stepping 12, CPU Speed: 1861 MHz , it also said that it was DDR2 PC2-5200.

The program suggested replacing with (2-off) which they said was the highest spec usable of.

• Moduledule Size: 1GB

• Specs: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 •

• I have googled and found that recommended elsewhere, also on a dell site it says you can use DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz (PC2-6400) and some guy offered me this yesterday at 800Baht for two sticks (used). Which is likely to be best please?

Also she has brought me my CD of Win7 Ultimate (full copy I paid about 155GBP) but her ‘students copy’ of Ultimate is still in the UK but I can get the product key e-mailed to me. M$ Upgrade advisor says ok, just a few things to check after installation. It suggests a clean install as she is running XP Pro (SP2!). Should I re-format her hard drive first? I know her Win XP product key…I was thinking of running my install disc but inputting her ‘upgrade’ product key, …I assume that will work, WILL IT?

thanks

If you can go to the guy who offered you the mem and ask him to put it into the notebook. Then start it and look if you have the memory expected. If so look for the money.

But this is no guarantee that the mem might not have a problem. Often memory has a lifetime warranty. Should work for the sticks too even if you do not have the original receipt.

800 bahts is a reasonable price for 2 x 1GB RAM. In a shop it could be around 1500 bahts.

As Beggar said, let the guy install the memory and test it. You should download unzip and burn Memtest86 Bootable CD and run the test on the laptop.

If you don't get any error the memory is OK.
