Birthday Cards

Featured Replies

Hi

My mate is married to Thai wife and lives here in UK, I am also seeing his sister in law who still lives in Thailand, anyhow recently it was the babies 1st birthday and although they sent presents (with me from my trip) none of her family sent a card, do Thai people send birthday cards, he didnt think much of it until his wife was preparing a card for her father from the baby?

In my wife's family and circle of friends cards are never sent.

The exception being that my wife and I exchange cards on birthdays, wedding anniversary, etc.

However, I do see a lot of Thai language cards in the shops, so someone must be buying them.

May be something to do with the respect of elders that the card was made for the grandfather. My wife has never received anything from her family for her birthday, however she always gives something to her parents and a card.

I once gave a Birthday Card to a Thai friend - he never opened it, just screwed it up with the wrapping paper from his gift and put it in the bin.

I also gave a Christmas Card to another Thai - he did the same.

They both knew how to open the gifts though.. lol. :)

I don't think Thai people bother with Cards, because when my Partner gives me a birthday card, it is still sealed in the selofane wrap from when he bought it..
