I have TOT and using their "std" (Thompson) modem and Ethernet my connection speed is OK. When however I connect the line to a Zyxel wireless modem the connection speed is lousy.

Is this something to do with my PC internal wireless system or just the Zyxel modem is not as good as TOT's ?

The theoretical connection speed to a wireless router is much slower than that of a wired connection, (54Mb/s compared to 100Mb/s or 1 Gb/s of a wired connection)

However, In theory it should still be much faster than your Internet connection. The only time you should notice a difference is when transferring files or data between two PC's in your home. using wireless or a cobination of wireless and wired cinections.

That is the theory. In practice the speed of a wireless connection can be affected by many things, such as number of users on the wireless connection, range and signal strength as well as interfernce from other wireless devices (such as mobile phones, cordless phones and baby alarms etc. in the same area. Even stray radiation from a microwave ovens and fluorescent lights can effect performance.

Most wifi routers operate at 2.4 GHz frequency band, same as most cordless phones and bluetooth devices. Thus, wifi interference is common.

My cordless phone is placed a few inches from my router, but it operates at 1.9 GHz frequency.

Came across a guy who placed his router next to a table lamp which uses an energy saving bulb. Changed the bulb to halogen and problem solved.
