December 6, 200916 yr Was just walking my son to school this morning and was wondering.... are there lots of flies there?? I mean - if you walk down the street do you constantly have to "wave" them off like you do here??? May seem silly - but its just one of the very many little things i am thinking of.....
December 6, 200916 yr mosquitos - early morning and late evening, but some dangerous ones also daytime. Flies are annoying, mosquitos spread serious illnesses
December 6, 200916 yr Author but some dangerous ones also daytime. mosquitos spread serious illnesses Such as? I know of malaria which we needed to be careful of on certain areas in Africa.... but what diseases do they spread in Thailand - do they have safety precaustions, etc?
December 7, 200916 yr but some dangerous ones also daytime. mosquitos spread serious illnesses Such as? I know of malaria which we needed to be careful of on certain areas in Africa.... but what diseases do they spread in Thailand - do they have safety precaustions, etc? yeah, Thailand have cases of Dengue fever - usually during the raining monsoon period. They do have vaccinations for children and high risk people. I've really not seen a full eradication process, only warnings... I wish they would do more to rid the flies and mostquitos
December 14, 200916 yr Nowhere has as many flies as Aus. See the occasional flies in Thailand, but no more than in the UK. But it's the sand flies and mosquitoes that you don't always see that are annoying here.
December 15, 200916 yr The border at Aranyaprathet / Poipet has the worst plague of flies I've seen here. Anywhere there is uncollected garbage. They are the little buggers that stick to you, just like the buggers in Aus. The rest of Thailand is fairly good. You won't be saluting all day long. Mozzies are the insects to worry about here, Dengue fever and Malaria are a curse and dangerous. Lots of good repellents are available here, especially the expensive Belgian roll-on one, whose brand name escapes me at the moment. Boots carry it. Anything with Deet works, if you do come here bring some Bushman Repellent found in most chemists, the co. is based in Cairns. I would advise avoiding any jungle trecking & (jungle) border areas. I've been here 10 years and have never been bitten. Touch wood!
December 15, 200916 yr ^ GD, you've been here 10 years and you've never been bitten by a mosquito? Unbelievable. I have been a few places in Thailand where the flies have been quite bad but those instances have been the acception to the rule. Theres nothing in this world as 'sticky' as an outback Australian fly
December 15, 200916 yr I've been here 10 years and have never been bitten. Touch wood! More likely you lack the slight allergic reaction wich creates the little itchy bump after being stung by a mozzie! I have the same, first thinking I never got bitten, but actually saw one bite me, suck my blood, and left. Kept staring at the area on my skin and bugger all happened. No bump, no mark, no itch Later confirmed by a doctor friend. Still just as dangerous regarding contracting dengue or malaria though!!!

I've been bitten in Aus but no precautions were taken then. I use a spray at dawn & sunset & make sure I spray the skin I cannot see. I have a lot of plants outside on the narrow pavement & they seem to attract a lot of flies, I can't figure out why as there in no garbage out there. The narrow pavement here is not for pedx. Mozzies breed in new banana leaves, so I give my nanas a good shakedown, daily. A fan directed on myself helps too while having a dawnbreaker coffee. (and a couple of black light mozzie traps helps too.) Must admit, I'm paranoid about contracting Dengue.
December 16, 200916 yr Having been in Perth last Christmas and having to wear a fly net constantly, and in rotto and on the Margret river there are no way near the amount of flies here. The ones in Oz are terrible in your eyes, up you nose all over any cut you have. i love Oz but the flies, you can keep.
December 16, 200916 yr I love it in Oz when your trying to eat something and the little buggers fly into ur mouth
December 16, 200916 yr Author Anything with Deet works, if you do come here bring some Bushman Repellent found in most chemists, the co. is based in Cairns. This is what we use here generally if we go somewhere in the evenings to keep the mozzies away!!!
