CD/DVD burning is different, I've had too many go bad so I don't do it anymore. I store stuff on hard disks (main + backup).

In fact, I don't use CDs or DVDs anymore at all. All media is on the computer, on hard drives, on the iPod, iPhone, etc. If I buy a CD or DVD, then the only purpose is to rip the media to my hard drive. I have no need for discs...

I bought a cylinder of Princo Budget CDs from the local shop. They were cheap but unfortunately that's all the local shop had. At least 50 percent were defective. The last cylinder I bought were HP and not a single one was bad.

This is correct. If you buy a copied DVD movie for instance it is most likely burned. But if you buy the original then it is printed. The latter will hold much longer. Just put for instance both into the sun for a while and check afterwards.

But the copied versions have an advantage too. They will NEVER have a different Region Code than 0. Because this information cannot be burned but only printed. I am tired of the Region Codes and fixing the drives if you change too often...

Which application do you use to rip the DVDs to the HD?

To be honest - I do not watch any movies. So I do not rip anything. I just create my own DVDs with videos I shot.

But for sure you know that you can copy DVDs without copy protection just to different media and start them from there. I have no idea what cracks exist for others.

lothda, how to polish the surface of a disc and how successful is it in recovering a damaged disk ?

Better late than never: PowerMall has a disc polishing set from Philips for sale. Obviously it can only remove slight scratches and surface clouding. For that it works fine for me.
