No worries, I mess it up myself often enough :D

Whats your point about Thai Ridgeback dogs then? Do you have one?

I want one, look great, but then I always wanted a Rhodesian Ridgeback Dog as well. :D

Unfortunately in a Bangkok appartment so don't think it's fair on the dog at all, but when I get that big house on the beach......... :o

There's a few pics of one from a member 'redhotchilli', great looking dog.

No point as such. I do have one myself in Isaan (I'm now back in the UK for a few months). Just would like to hear from anyone who has an interest/opinion on them to talk about it. Better than watching the telly.

I'm going to bookmark this thread and read it everytime I foolishly start missing England. :o

Yes, you are definetly in the right place now. We've been home nearly two weeks and the novelty has certainly worn off.

Still, there's always Coronation Street or Emmerdale.....................

Emmerdale killed itself with the plane crash episodes, after those, it just couldn't get any better and just went downhill for me. :o

Anyway, as a newbie I s'pose I should tell you that if this stays off topic it'll be closed so better get talking about Thai Ridgeback Dogs again.

Quite a rare breed abroad I have been led to believe. Any reason why?

There have been people coming over to Thailand from the U.S and Europe to take dogs back for breeding in the last ten or so years. Apparently only a few westerners had heard of the breed before that. This dog originates from the east of Thailand and was a 'jungle dog'. I suppose when the jungles went, the breed became more accessible to western visitors.

Thai Ridgebacks have changed a bit from the old photos of them as in the Thai stamp of 1990, as breeders in Thailand and other parts of the world have mixed rottweilers, dobermans and pitballs into the breed.

There's 18 Thai Ridgebacks now in England. They can cost between £500-800 for a pup. A bit more than in Thailand but good one's there aren't cheap either.

Only 18 in the UK? Could be quite a lucrative trade there for someone, I bet they would be popular dogs, especially for the wannabe hard nuts.

Someone recently said they picked up on for 50 quid at JJ market, but like all dogs it's the pedigree that determines the price.

How many you reckon I could fit in hand luggage on a plane? :o

I think the dogs teeth might come under the 'no sharp objects' rule.

I've got one. He is a bit of a lazy bastard, but also quite a character. When I walk him, most Thais give us a wide berth. He actually is very people friendly unless you walk onto the property unannounced. Around other dogs, he always must be the top dog – no two ways about it. His favorite hobby is killing chickens. Not so good for PR or my pocketbook when it is the neighbor’s prized fighting cock. :o

I did have two. One red and one silver/grey (they call them blue). They were both 4 months old and the red one bullied the blue big time - he broke a tooth while biting the head of the blue. Blood every day on the blue. Just trying to establish who's the leader of the pack and all that but the red also used to stare other people out and so I didn't really trust him. He was a big lump at 4 months and people looked wary of him. Shame because I really like the red colour.

Anyway, gave him back to the breeder who informed me I was the second person to take him and bring him back for similar reasons (now they tell me). No refund (I didn't expect one) so I lost over a hunredred quid.

Not all bad news though. The blue dog is good natured and gets on well with everyone and most other dogs, including soi and village dogs. He doesn't chase chickens but I've read the Thai Ridgebacks have an old prey drive that kicks in at some point and thats when small animals have problems.

I can confuse the issue a little more. I wanted a Doberman but was talked out of that. I decided a Ridge back would do fine since a friend of mine has some puppies. His female is pretty stand offish and does not like many people. After a few weeks of meeting and drinking with my Thai friend the dog (bitch) decided she liked me and he was impressed enough to offer me two puppies. Problem solved. Or not? My girlfriend decided that she didn't want a dog like everyone else has so we now have a Golden Retriever. Whew! Nothing is ever easy when you have a Thai girlfriend.

I like Golden Retrievers. How does your one get on with the heat?

I like Golden Retrievers too, but a choice between one of them and a happy gf and a Thai Ridgeback and an unhappy gf, no contest, I'm gonna have an unhappy gf :o

Yes, if you can get a good Thai Ridgeback they're worth holding onto.

I had a Maa Lang Ahn which I believe is the ridge. Bought it as a puppy. Good guard dog, but eventually got a bit mean and bit me. First time I was ever bitten by a dog. Got hit by a car not too long after that. Now I have three of the only soi dogs in Thailand that do not bark. So friendly they would lick the hand of any burglar that wandered in.

The 'Mah Thai' means 'Dog Thai' and the 'Lung Ahn' means 'Back Ridge'.

Sorry to hear about you dog.

Anyone got a Bangaew Thai dog? You know, the very longed haired dogs that are mostly white with patches of brown. They seem to bark excessively.
