Your website mentions that you provide a statutory statement of proof of single status (which I would need to have notarized by my embassy). How to I obtain the statement?

In the same information, you mention that non-Thais wishing to marry need valid passports. Is a passport required of a Burmese national in Thailand? Is there other allowable identification for the purpose of registering a marriage at the amphur office?

Thanks

If an alien is registering to be married to a Thai citizen or another alien, he or she is required to submit following documents.

A copy of their passport.

A Letter of Certification, issued by an Embassy or Consulate or a Government Organization from their country, regarding the marital status of the person. The Letter must be translated, then certified by the relevant Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The above is from the public service manual and do not believe any District Office would not abide by it.

Also both parties are going to need these letters of certification which must be obtained from your respective Embassy.

There may be other avenues for displaced persons and such but the above is the general rule.

Unless you are 100% sure that your Burmese GF is in thailand legally, I'd be wary of taking her to the Burmese Embassy. When I talked the Embassy about 4 years ago, I was told that to be in Thailand legally, that must include a Burmese passport, properly stamped. Anyone else attempting to renter Burma would be arrested for leaving Burma w/out proper permission. I don't know if those powers of arrest would include the embassy grounds in Bkk, but I didn't want to take the chance.

At that time, I was looking at options for getting my Burmese wife to the States. According to my Embassy, it was no problem for them to give her travelling papers, but the Thai authorities would arrest her if she couldn't show that she had entered Thailand legally in the first place.

There has been a new law in Myanmar in October 2002 which does not allow a burmese citizen to marry to a foreigner.

I don't think you'll be able to clear it in the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok but it may have been some changes and the best to know is to try.

A burmese can be legal in Thailand with a local work permit as well.

I've got the legislation concerning the wedding for a foreigner who wish to mary to a Burmese citizen. Information provided by my embassy which got it from the Thai authorities but unfortunately, it is in Thai language and you'll need to ask someone to translate it.

Let me know if you'd like to get it. If so, I'll scan and send it to you.

Which nationality are you ? Some embassies have different rules about the wedding as well.

Cheers

I am curious to hear the rest of your story. What happened with you and your partner? [email protected]

I have a burmese (Thai lue) gf for 2yrs (shan state) and i have decided to get her to stay in thailand, as burmese state laws restricts any foreign marriage to non-burmese..

what should i do to apply for her to be able to stay in parts of thailand for longer period of times.

She's going to be 21 soon. and we are planning to reside in thailand.

I have a internet-based job generating income and will also be planning to move into thailand, preferbly bangkok to stay.

how do i go about doing it?

i am more concerned about getting her a thai PR/Ciitizenship becuz i hope to be able to bring my kid to my parent country in future.

i think if she is still holding onto the burmese pass and a kid is born, the kid can only be a burmese without my name in the birthcert , and otherwise be stateless?

im quite a newbie in this hope u guys can guide me..

thanks!!!

Seriously, I think you need to consult a lawyer regarding these matters. Better off getting your information from someone that specialises in this sort of thing.

Too many complications, and too much at stake, to leave it to "people that know someone that had a friend whose cousin helped another person with a situation sort of like this".

Good luck.

My brother (Thai/Japanese dual citizen) married a Burmese wife last year who's been living in Thailand for over ten years with fake Thai ID. We did send her back to Burma through Mae Sot but no arrest or detention at border by both sides, only it has taken her more than three months to get a Burmese passport from what I remember, and some 30,000 Baht tea money for obtaining a passport. Now she has to pay a few thousands Baht tax every Burmese resident overseas is required to pay to the embassy every year.
