Restaurant Reviews

Dear Thai Visa,

In answer to a request to submit a review of our favourite restaurant by the eating out reviewer at the "Chiangmai Mail" newspaper, I was told my review of Charlies Fish and Chip restaurant didn't qualify as it was small and to specialised.

But Lo and Behold in the next edition of the newspaper was a review of a smaller than Charlies restaurant specialising in Italian food.

So I thought I would give you my review of Charlies in the hope of somebody reading it and visiting the best Fish and Chip shop in Thailand.

If anyone has never been to Charlies, besides the Fish and Chips there are Bangers and Mash, delicious Toasted Sandwiches, Meat pies, coffee, tea, beer and wine. Then there's the fruit pies and ice cream. Not a bad selection for a small restaurant!

The restaurant is best reached from Loi Kroh Road, if you go into the car parking area between the Temples Wat Pan Tong and Wat Loi Kroh and take the lane that faces you on the right just a few yards down you will see Charlies.

I guarantee you will not be dissapointed. My email address is delboy60 @ yahoo.com if anyone would like more information.

Maybe Chiangmai news did not consider it a restaurant. It has no roof, very little shade and it only purports to be a chippy. Very few tables too so I can understand their point.

I think reviews of eating places ( chippies and restaurants) on TV would be a good idea but a review needs to be a bit more detailed. What types of fish? How cooked - beer batter?

I know of only one that uses beer batter in CM

I rate the fish and chips at Charlie's but Caf's right it's a fast food eatery.

To quote the op "But Lo and Behold in the next edition of the newspaper was a review of a smaller than Charlies restaurant specialising in Italian food"

I'm assuming it was 'Gianni de Burchio' which was reviewed a couple of weeks ago and I wrote a post about it today, personally I'm glad the Italian restaurant was reviewed and Charlies Wasn't :)

Then again maybe we should give the op the benefit of the doubt, he must be some sort of Fish and Chips nerd, His 1st post on Thai Visa was praising Charlie's in the fish and chip poll in October his second is today with a restaurant review of Charlies :D

The first part of his name is about right :D one of charlies mates :)

I visited Charlie's fish and chips for the first time last week.

I had the fish and chips and thought they were really good. Wasn't cod, but it tasted like the next best thing to cod. I followed that with a fruit pie and a few dollops of ice cream. The food portions were generous and the price reasonable. He also serves wine that went down nicely with the fish and chips.

The owner who calls himself Cheerful Charlie made me feel welcome and I felt comfortable in there because everyone was friendly and sociable.

I quite fancied his chef, nice young lady with a cute smile.

Only criticism about the place is that it`s tucked away in a Soi and difficult to find. But once you're been there once, finding it again is easy. I will visit Cheerful Charlie's again, I liked it.

The cute young lady handed me a card, which included his web site address. Here it is for those who are interested and may wish to try some of Charlie's fish and chips.

This is my opinion and my review, so if anyone wants to have a personal pop at me about my thoughts on these eating houses, I will now tell you to F--- off in advance.

A friend recently visited a restaurant in Mae Rim. He said it was great and recommended it to me. My friend said, everything had a Beatles theme, including the plates, cups and tables.

The following is a review I found on a web site:

http://www.1stopchiangmai.com/what_to_see/mae_sa_valley/

I Love The Beatles restaurant

Owner Kitiwat Leelayut, aka Jiab, was a professional rock guitarist for 30 years and has built his restaurant as a tribute to The Beatles. He's on site and very friendly. The food is good, a selection of Northern Thai dishes as well as noodle dishes, averaging around 40 to 60 baht a dish. There are three bungalows for those who wish to stay in the area. They include television, en-suite toilet and hot water for prices ranging from 800 to 1000 baht per night.

Well signposted from the main road, the Paradise Spa Resort and Restaurant provides luxurious accommodation (at the most expensive rates in Chiang Mai)

Directions Follow Chan Phuek road, opposite Chang Phuek Gate on the Northern side of the Moat, for approx. 10kms until you enter the built up area of Mae Rim town. The turn off to Samoeng, to the left just beyond the built up area, is well signposted and takes you straight into the Mae Sa valley within a few kilometres.

I live quite far from Mae Rim, but this sounds fun, and may give this place a try in the future.

Most posters will accept that everyone has a right to his own opinion. And every has different tastes of course.

Personally, having visited other eateries, I would not accept that portion sizes were good or that the meals are good value. But that is my view.

There was no need for your closing sentence.

so when was the CM Food subforum going to be started?

im sure the F&C hamburger pizza et al has been done to death

while we're at it add a Pollution/flood water level sub forum too

merry xmas :)

I hope it does get started. Just for personal recommendations. Apart from his last sentence, Bigwheelman's review is the sort of thing needed. Whether we agree with the review or not is not relevant.

Maybe we should approach this in a different way. Since there are now 11 food related threads on the first page, the CM forum should be restricted to food exclusively. A sub-forum should be started for "non-food" posts.
