My Precious Knee

My left knee got hurt in early March when I slipped down from stairs. The pain lasted about two weeks and the doctor said my knee was completely recovered when the pain released and suggested me to go swimming. He didnt tell me which part of my knee got hurt and just told me my bones were all okay. So I guess my ligament got hurt.

Yesterday I found my knee had no strength when I were dancing with high-heel shoes. Now I'm really worried about my knee. Do I need go to see a doctor again or just need more relax and no dance?

Hope to hear some suggestions from you guys. Thanks.

My guess you put all your weight on one knee when you were walking during your recovery and maybe after that as well.

Try to balance your weight on both legs while walking and do the walking excercise in the pool. It helps to get your injured knee strenght back.

But do not over do it as it would make the injury worst.

To check if your knee is fully recorvered, try to climb up a staircase by 2 steps at a time. If the knee still hurt or not enough strenght means you still need some work to do to get it to 100%.

Anyway, this is based on my personal experience of recovery after an accident sometime ago.

Good luck

I would agree with Explorer, except attempting to climb two stairs at a time. This may be all that is needed to completely seperate tendons from the joint.

The knee joint is like all other load bearing joints-imperfect. You will have to accept that it will take a considerably long time to heal completely-months even before you feel fully recovered. Physio in the pool is excellent and keep off the high heels, they increase the load at awkward angles. Soft flat soles for a while.

When I damaged my knee it was a full year before it was completely repaired.

The bad news is that getting a knee specialist in this country is tough...

My knees were very bad, I gave up on doctors & did the research myself. I'm OK now but I have to keep stretching....

Here's a summary....

In the days after injury, you need to regularly apply ice & elevate your knee above your heart - i.e. - lie on your back with legs on a chair.

Compression helps too- so a good knee wrap (the type with a hole over the kneecap) should be work the first few days.

Do not engage in any activities in the first few days

The key here is to reduce swelling/inflammation as this is your mortal enemy on any joint injry.

For rehab - read these...

Treat Your Own Knees - By: Jim Johnson, James R., M.D. Roberson

The Knee Crisis Handbook : Understanding Pain, Preventing Trauma, Recovering from Knee Injury, and Building Healthy Knees for Life - By: Brian Halpern, Laura Tucker

Both books take you through the necessary process to ensure correct muscular balance, strength, endurance, flexibility & proprioception - all can be knocked out of synch with even a minor knee injury.

For ANY knee exercise - stop if it's painful - if it's not painful it's OK basically.

Lay off the high-heeled shoes for a while too...

Good advise Pedro. The only Countries that tend to have good knee specialists are the ones that get lots of injuries through sport etc

An orthorpedic surgen might be your best bet.

It could be ligament damage or just soft tissue.Your average doc knows bugger all about knees anyway.

To determine possible damage to the various knee components, you need to have at least some x-rays, but preferably a CAT or MRI scan. (Tissue damage is difficult to see in standard x-rays.)

If possible, would recommend you consult with an Orthopedic specialist. Tore ligaments may require surgery for reattachment. At a minimum, your probably looking at months for recovery, not days or weeks. (Age can also effect recovery time.)

High heels and certain dance movements, may put extreme stress on knees and ankles. I would avoid such practices until your doctor gives his approval and/or until you have fully recovered from the original injury.

Hope you have a speedy recovery. :o

I have got aknee problem also. Was playing football about 6 weeks ago. I'm a goalkeeper. Didn't feel anything wrong during the game. But after it felt funny. But no pain. So went home after a few beers and went to bed. The next day. Shit man i could hardly walk. Over the next few days it still hurt alot but became easier. Didn't go and see the doc as i thought a couple of weeks and it will be ok. 6 weeks later and it still hurts a bit. I can run on it. But if i have sitting down. Then it hurts a bit when i get up. Went to the doc a week ago. He had a look, twisted it a bit pressed here and there. Decides its the tendon. So he says dont run or jump for a week. So i havent. But i'm playing football tomorrow. Should be ok eventually. Just hoping i'm not too busy tomorrow.

Buy those books I recommended in my previous post. You need to train to strengthen that knee.
