Office of Atoms for Peace denies leakage at Suvarnabhumi airport

The secretary-general of the Office of Atoms for Peace Friday denied that there was a leakage of iridium 192 (Ir 192) at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Chaiwat Torsakulkaew, the secretary-general of the office, said the reports about the leakage stemmed from misunderstanding on part of workers.

Chaiwat said workers thought there was leakage of the radioactivity of Ir 192 after they saw the card box of the Ir 192 package crumbled a little bit.

But the Ir 192, which is made as a bar with width less than 1 centimetre, is also kept inside thick lead bar, which is also kept in a six-inch container inside the card box, Chaiwat said.

Anyway, officials of the Office of Atoms for Peace, were deployed to check level of radioactivity at the warehouse where the box is kept but fond no trace of leakage.
