PATTAYA’S COUNTDOWN 2010 THE BEST EVER

The New Years Eve "Countdown 2010" was again traditionally held at South Pattaya’s Bali Hai Pier, and this year was a big seven day event that ended as it began with beauty contests, celebrities and singers right up to the final midnight countdown.

Pattaya, - Thursday 31st December 2009 [PDN]: - This year’s event seemed to be much better planned than previous new year count downs, with better spectator facilities and certainly a lot better traffic control. This was helped by plenty of rehearsal time in that the preceding days saw

nightly entertainment and fireworks, for each of the seven nights leading up the final "New Years Eve Countdown."

The crowd on the final night were 100% enthusiastic about supporting some of Thailand’s leading celebrities, with young singer "Fluke" drawing a huge amount of adoration from the crowd. The trio of supporting male dancers were almost as popular, so the air was charged with excitement by the time Pattaya’s Mayor, Khun Ittiphol Khunplome and the other VIP officials mounted the stage for the final countdown. The clock went down to zero, then the fireworks went up as everyone cheered wildly to welcome in a new year that everyone hopes will see more peace & prosperity.

Among the leading officials were executives from the major sponsoring companies, Pattaya’s deputy mayors & other city hall officials, plus Khun Revat Phonlukin and Khun Chenyut Hengtrakul, to name but a few of the leading community figures who attended this happy event. After midnight the official party retired to the VIP stand, whilst the entertainment continued, much to the pleasure of the crowd.

Those who were leaving on foot found that the notorious bottle-neck at the southern entrance to Walking Street was still very slow, but without the dangerous crush of previous years. Full marks to Pattaya’s police, who did a marvellous job of controlling the traffic, which kept moving at all times (albeit sometimes slowly). An unexpected problem occurred when too much traffic tried to proceed up the steep northern side of Pratumnak (Hill) Road resulting in a traffic jam. We are not sure what these motorists were trying to achieve by choosing this unusual route, but "stop / start" driving up a steep hill was certainly not a good beginning for the 2010 New Year.

A vote of confidence should also go to Pattaya City Hall and all those associated with the organisation of this latest New Years Eve "Countdown 2010," because its success is exactly what was needed to boost our tourism industry. Many foreign nationals have stated that the Bali Hai countdown was becoming too hectic to attend, but this year, sanity seems to have returned, so come to the next one and enjoy the "new look" 2011 countdown.
