Crazed policeman goes on rampage

SURAT THANI: -- Surat Thani Hospital in the South of Thailand erupted into panic in the early hours of this morning when a crazed policeman who had stolen a gun and over 200 bullets went on the rampage.

Pol. Sgt. Maj. Jamnoch Kaeowyang, the 41 year-old officer from the provincial police force, is said to have ridden up to the hospital on his motorcycle at 03.30 hrs and fired over 10 bullets into the air, causing chaos and panic among patients and medical staff.

As police officers approached the hospital to arrest him, the police sergeant leapt onto his motorcycle and rode through the streets of Surat Thani, shooting at the officers trying to follow him.

After a chase through the town, the police sergeant returned to the hospital shortly before 08.00 hrs, where he entered the wards and diagnosis area, already packed with queues of patients waiting to be seen.

Eventually he was captured by plain-clothed police officers and security volunteers, who seized his weapons. No-one was injured in the incident.

Pol. Col. Prasit Sriwattanaphong, superintendent of Surat Thani district police station, attributed the police sergeant’s actions to mental health problems and his recent desertion by his wife and children.

Pol. Sgt. Maj. Jamnoch had apparently stolen the M16 gun and over 200 bullets from the police station where he worked.

He will be charged with theft, the illegal possession of weapons, carrying weapons in public and shooting in public.

He has been detained in solitary confinement in Surat Thani district police station, and has been refused bail.
