Thailand Loves America

The Chinese fought against, South Korea, USA, UK, Australia, Belguim, Ethopia, Canada, Colombia, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey and did not lose.

Another words they fought against a lot of the same troops that won WW II only 5 years before. They fought to a stalemate the combined might of the Allied Powers being unable to defeat them. Of course Russia was in the background. But to write off the Army of China then as now is pure nonsense. During the war there were four million military and civilian casualties, including 33,600 American, 16,000 UN allied, 415,000 South Korean, and 520,000 North Korean dead. There were also an estimated 900,000 Chinese casualties. Half of Korea's industry was destroyed and a third of all homes.

So you're telling me the Chinese suffered some 40 percent casualties? Or 30 TIMES the US casualties? Some stalemate. If memory serves me right, MacArthur then pushed them back out of South Korea and was ready to keep going all the way to China until he was famously relieved of command.

The US projected force all the way around the world, while the Chinese simply poured across the Yalu River, which is its own border, and still they could not prevail.

At any rate, we can debate whether that indeed was a "foreign invasion", but it was a painful lesson that I think is still a cautionary tale for Chinese leaders. To get back on the subject of China posing a military threat to foreign counties today, I don't think their experiences in military adventurism left them hungering for more. Even their exercises in "soft power" by backing regimes in Burma, Cambodia -- and yes, N. Korea -- have severely damaged their status and come back to bite them. China is not exactly held in high esteem around the world.

Also keep in mind the tenets listed in the "Art of War." Direct battle is the very last option listed. Lying, subterfuge, bribery ... these are preferred.

The Thai Seri never really got off the ground due to bureaucratic wrangling. Although they did convince the US to unfreeze Thai assets in American banks so they had some money to live during the war in Washington.

They might not have much inpact on the diretion of the war because of the nuclear bombs but to me they are very much of the ground.

MacArthur pushed the North Korean Army back to the Chinese border. No Chinese in Korea yet.

The Chinese Army crossed the border and attacked the Americans pushing them back to South Korea.

The Americans landed more troops and pushed the Chinese back to the 38 parallel.

Truman told MacArthur to stop. He criticized the Presidents decision publicly. The President fired him.

America got a new President who threatened to drop the Atom bomb in the Chinese.

The Chinese stopped fighting.

Back to the origial point of this thread. The Thais fought on the side of the Americans during the Korean conflict.

I guess it's just because America is cool. Simple as that really. I traveled to a dozen different countries so far and have talked with people from Austria to Zimbabwe and the only folks that I get any anti-American sentiment from are usually the English.

Why?? Who knows, furthermore... who cares?

But the fact remains that everyone else thought it was cool that I came from the States. And if they had ever visited (even if for a moment) or if they had a relative, no matter how distant, they would bring it up.

Truth is nothing but love really. Like even in the middle east, Especially in the middle east actually, folks have treated me great there. Iran? I sadly had to break a Iranian girls heart once when I chose to be with a Thai girlfriend (now my wife) over her. Before that, in Kuwait, I had one man (Kuwaiti) who was assigned to mentor one of the Amir's son's, offer me the hand of his 17yr old daughter in marriage. I only refused because I already had a local girlfriend there. I have friends, business, and networks in many places that are portied by the media to be "Anti-American" yet I have found that being American has only helped me.

Folks like America cause America is the mother of Cool. Sure everyone sees the BS that my govt dose (like Bush for example) but they are quick to let it go when you talk to them in person.

What to say about americans in general?? Hm.. it is very dificult to say anything about america because there is living so many different people there, and they are all different.

The thing that pisses most people off with Americans is their complete lack of geographical and cultural knowledge. It can however like anything else be bought in America, but it is canned and easy to serve and noone there who bothers to buy it understand a shit of it.

But who doesn´t love the americans when you get to know some of them. They are mostly polite, well-mannered and very often generous. I personally have no problem to make friends with them.

But as I said, It is not a good thing wihen you can compare americans with thai people what regards knowledge of others. World series of Baseball (who the fuc_k play baseball?),

So...Americans are all different except that they(we) all lack geographical & cultural knowledge? Is it any wonder that it's so hard to take some of you guys seriously? :)

I think one must realize that in a lot of states in America driving to the grocery store may be the distance equivalent of driving to a different country in Europe. The geographical and cultural variety in the US and our next door neighbor Canada leaves few reasons for Americans to travel outside of North America.

In major cities like New York, Chicago and San Francisco the food choices are the same as a world tour without the risk of food poisoning. Chinese food is better in San Francisco than China. Pizza is better in Chicago than Italy. Mexican food is better in San Antonio than Mexico. There are less reasons for Americans to travel than many other countries.

However going back to the topic of this thread. Absence of geographic and cultural knowledge far from alienating Thais is a basis of common ground.

If one has to pick a country with less geographic and cultural knowledge than the US it would be Thailand.

Don't forget the lousy French food in Paris! :)
