Does anyone know of a photography store in bangkok that sells black and white film that is made with the silver particles? Failing my hunt for eclipse glasses i am told i can make my own with this type of photographic stock...i think a specialist photography store may have it. Any pro photographers in Bangers that know where to buy this film? Thanks guys.

I understand that what you need is the exposed and processed end of a roll (B&W only colour is not safe).

THAT SAID I would be looking for something professional (you only have one set of eyes), would arc-welders glass do the trick (or be too dark).

This is a superb resource http://www.mreclipse.com/Totality/TotalityCh11.html

EDIT Having read the warnings on the above links I would NOT recommend the exposed film viewers!!!

I would be willing to bet that suitable glasses are available at the eclipse viewing sites :D at a suitably premium price of course :)

Thanks for that...I have read that the safest material to use is the b/w silver particle film which i would expose and develop for the eclipse...if i can't find it i will give your suggestion with the film rolls a try :) many thanks

According to one of my links http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/safety2.html :-

One of the most widely available filters for safe solar viewing is shade number 14 welder's glass, which can be obtained from welding supply outlets.

Those should be fairly easy to obtain :D

BTW COLOUR film is NOT suitable (I edited my post after you'd quoted).

I have an electronic welding mask, the type that turns dark as soon as there is an arc, with these you can vary the darkness with a control knob, I think they would be ideal for what you want to do. The cheaper versions should be under 2000 baht.

wow - in that case a simple welding filter should be very affordable then!

May be affordable for your tight budget but probably will be too dark.

NASA recommend a number 14 welding glass (I'm prepared to accept their judgement) :)

However an electronically adjustable unit would likely be even better :D

Forget the glasses and photographic film, unless you want to be blinded.

Read http://www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse/how.html to see how to view the eclipse safely.

There is no way you will get blinded with a decent welding mask! Because of the close distance the welding arc is more intense than the sun, it can easily give flash burns to your eye's I have never had the sun do this to me but have had it from a faulty welding mask, the result is very painful. Took 5 days to get back to normal vision, luckily no permanent damage.

So I agree you must be careful.

The Nikon camera dealership at the low end of Silom that stocks negative for both convential 35mm format, as well as most medium and large format sizes - in black & white, colour, slow speed fine grains, high speed types - they stock the full range of Fuji and Kodak consumer and pro types of negative, process chemicals and a huge variety of paper sizes and types.

Excellent selection of pro Agfafilm types and papers.

All film, chemicals (and some of the specialist papers) are stocked in 2 or 3 glass fronted fridges - and it's always within it's sell by date. Yes, it's a professional shop - they do a good job.

Where exactly?

Down Silom - towards the Chinatown. Walking down you want to be on the right hand side (i.e. against the traffic). If you get to the junction of Silom and Sarasin you have gone past the shop. It's about a block of 2 (at most) before you get to the Sarasin/Silom junction - and on the right hand side of Silom.

Sarasin road is the last major road across Silom, and around 100yards before the motorway flyover cross's Silom, at which point (i.e. another 100 hundred yards or so after going under the motorway, you turn off to the right to get into China town).

Thank you soooo much. I will go in there next week on my way out to Burma!
