Help! Notebook Wireless Unable To Connect

Recommended Posts

Dear Folks,

Few days ago I replaced my True supplied Modem with D-Link All-In-One wireless router and connection were working fine for both PC and notebook, and since yesterday it stopped connecting on my Dell Latitude D510 notebook due to

Limited or No Connectivity as shown on the networks connection. :D I have try to disable the firewall and yet still unable to connect :D , both my PC and Notebook OS is Window XP -SP3.

As a IT illiterate :) I have no idea which way to resolve the connection conflicts, therefore your enlightenment will be much appreciate.

Thanks & Regards

Restart your modem. I have the same problems many time's. Put the electric off, wait a minut, electric on and wait another 2/3 minutes and try again!

Good luck!

But if it behaves like that, it is broken and you should return it. I have a Belkin router staying up for years without any problems and that without a UPS.

But did you set up the admin passwords and disable the possibility to admin it from outside? Did you set up encryption to wpa-2?

Cause if you didn't, there is a chance that maybe someone has broken in and changed the settings?

I use dynamic DNS to get the IP of my router and very often when the IP change I end up in someone elses router instead of my own server.

I have yet to see a single router, that is protected at all and I have always been able to get into the admin page of these routers just by typing the default password. People who install these router are obviously not as capable as they should.

Of course, I'm a nice guy so I never screw up other peoples stuff deliberately, but not all people are nice and kids like to play tricks and turn off stuff for people.

See if you can admin the thing and get the factory setting back and redo the setup from scratch. Change admin password, setup WPA2, disable the admin from outside possibilities, test again and see if it is still causing problems.

This modem+wireless router that I bought were installed by the sale assistance at my house using installation disk, and wireless communication worked perfectly between PC and notebook without problem. Two days ago, the notebook networks connection icon start showing Limited or No Connectivity but wireless icon shown that it is connecting and is working. I have tried to disable the notebook firewall and even restart the modem and yet nothing has change. :D

I know nothing about Admin setting and the modem manual doesn’t mentions anything about Limited or No Connectivity and yet PC connection still working perfectly. :)

I’m willing to get my hand dirties If there is a pointer or way of resetting the whole setting. Hope you kind folks can give me some direction in solving this wireless issue. Thanks & Appreciate.

Limited or No connectivity also just sez there is a connect between your Laptop and the modem/router. If I get this message I normally find an issue between the ISP (Internet Service Provider) and my modem. IE you have no connection to the internet. As said before, reboot the modem or call the service provider.

Maybe I misunderstood? As I understood it, the PC connected to the router via cable works? Including the Internet? And the Laptop is not...?

Ok I try to keep it short, please ask if there are ? marks... It is difficult to cover this subject in a short piece like this.

This message indicates that the connection is there, signal is there but some parts are missing, maybe the IP is not received. If the wifi network adapter is setup to automatically receive IP then the router has to give the IP to the laptop upon request. This function is called DHCP so the router is a DHCP server in addition to being a router. Your laptop is a DHCP client. You can check if the Laptop has an IP address by the command "ipconfig /all" from the command line promt. (start, run and type "cmd")

I don't have the exact details about this particular router. Tried the D-link homepage for a manual but unsuccessful.

But the principles are be the same for most routers... so here we go:

Use a computer connected to the router with cable. (if WiFi doesn't work...)

1. Open up you web browser and type in the IP of the router, something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

This should take you to a web page hosted in your router.

2. If not, click start, run, type "cmd" on the line to get to the command shell. Type "ipconfig /all" and see if there is anything saying "default gateway". It should tell you the IP to the router. Go to point 1 again and try with the IP you get.

3. You will get a home page with username / password Log in. Probably both username and password are "admin" or something equally silly... maybe just a blank row... Check in the manual.

4. If successful you need to click around a little to familiarize yourself with the environment. You will find a status page where you can see if you are connected to the internet. You will find security or encryption where you can set the WPA2 encryption. You will find backup and restore which basically give you a file to download with all the settings. Can be good to do and make sure you do it if you intend to reset the router to the factory settings...It will take out your internet connection to so you must have the username/password for that. So do a factory reset only if everything else fails...

See if you can find a page about the DHCP server with a list of clients. See if the laptop is there.

In any case you need to set the admin password to something that is hard to guess, not the name of you cat, and you need to set the WPA2 encryption (which requires another password). On the laptop you will get prompted for that password when you try to connect.
