Intro: Waste separation from the sources is one way to reduce waste. But showing people proof the organic or wet waste can be easily transformed into organic fertilizer and used instead of chemicals, is even better and that leads to a better environment. This idea is being applied by the Krabi Municipality. Our reporter has more detail.

Each day the garbage van stops and picks up waste from Tha Daeng community in the Krabi municipality area. This is the main gathering or collection location for the separated waste from Krabi Yai sub-district before the waste is brought into the Effective Microorganism Production procedure. The program is carried out under the Krabi Municipality Office’s waste management by reducing and making the best use of waste. Kiratisak Phukaoluan, Krabi Mayor, told us: ‘Wet garbage comes from 2 sources; from households and our fresh market - Maharaj market. We purchase it, have it separated and turn the waste to organic fertilizer. The process is being run at our waste disposal site.’ Each day the wet waste such as leftover food, vegetables, fruit peel from households and the community, amounts to around 2 tons. The municipality office has a private firm to collect and purchase the waste at 50 satang per kilogram and transport to sell to the office at 1 baht per kilogram while the wet garbage from the municipality’s fresh market is bought at 30 satang per kilogram. This organic or wet garbage is then gathered and sent to the waste disposal centre and transformed into organic fertilizer. The procedure is that the waste is put in a crushing machine, then the Effective Microorganism liquid is put on them to stimulate disposal. Then it is put under the sun for 30 days – and later put in the crushing machine again and finally they do the packaging process. Chanasporn Ruengsorn, Director of Public Health and Environment, Krabi Municipality Office, said: ‘When we encourage people to separate their waste, we need to deal or manage it in a proper way, not just mix with overall waste. The mayor then has a policy that we carry out comprehensive programs, like what we are doing today.’ From barely wet garbage this is transformed into organic fertilizer and put up for sale to agriculturalists at 8 baht per kilogram. They can use in palm and rubber plantations. Meanwhile the leftovers of lime or orange peels or vegetables are separated to make น้ำหมักชีวภาพ . The municipality has tens of … Em tanks. The liquid is put in plastic bottles for multi-purpose use in households. They can minimize toilet smells or help feed plants functioning as a fertilizer.

The Krabi Mayor concluded: ‘We consider our area as a guest room of Krabi so we must keep it tidy and clean’. We can’t let waste spoil our natural beauty.’ They can produce 4,000 litres of EM per month, both in liquid and dry form. The municipality office gives out to members of the public while they also receive orders from palm plantation farmers. The EM technology application by the Krabi Municipality office helps the town reduce the number of garbage bins leading to a tidier town with a more pleasant environment as well.
