Apple Tablet 'Isn't Going To Cost Anywhere Near $1,000'

Jan. 25, 2010, 11:35 AM

After talking to sources in the publishing industry, Seth Weintraub at 9 to 5 Mac says he's been told the Apple tablet "isn't going to cost anywhere near $1,000."

His sources have met with Apple, which has been aggressively trying to lock in all the major publishers for the tablet.

Apple is pitching itself as the anti-Amazon. It's offering up better terms and it says the tablet will be like color television, while the Kindle is black and white.

Apple representatives have not shown any publishers the tablet, but have told them it will be ten inches in diagonal length, and about as heavy as a Kindle DX.

The EBook reading functionality is just one part of this device. The tablet is also expected to be a game playing, media watching, netbook-competing powerhouse as well.

Regarding the Kindle. Still will be better for reading as it is electronic ink would also expect the battery life of the tablet to be nowhere near the 2-3 weeks of the Kindle obviously.

I really don't think the apple tablet will be any match for the kindle in the ebook department - however it will have other benefits of over the kindle.

Could switch to 256 shades greyscale for easier reading. Still, agreed—not as comfy as the Kindle's e-ink.

In the textbook category, color will be a plus.

Frantic Steve Jobs Stays Up All Night Designing Apple Tablet

JANUARY 27, 2010 | ISSUE 46•04

CUPERTINO, CA—Claiming that he completely forgot about the much-hyped electronic device until the last minute, a frantic Steve Jobs reportedly stayed up all night Tuesday in a desperate effort to design Apple's new tablet computer. "Come on, Steve, just think—think, dammit—you're running out of time," the exhausted CEO said as he glued nine separate iPhones to the back of a plastic cafeteria tray. "Okay, yeah, this will work. This will definitely work. Just need to write 'tablet' on this little strip of masking tape here and I'm golden. Oh, come on, you piece of shit! Just stick already!" Middle-of-the-night sources reported that Jobs then began work on double-spacing his Keynote presentation and increasing the font size to make it appear longer.

Pad looks pretty much like an overgrown iPod touch - nothing particularly revolutionary about it. A half inch thin. Weighs just 1.5 pounds. Thinner and lighter than any netbook. 9.7 inch IPS display. Most advanced chip they've ever done; processor, graphics, I/O, and everything in one chip. 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of flash solid state storage.

My Sony Ebook reader fully charged gives approximately 2 weeks use. I know the Ipad is much more than an ebook reader but I'm not sure whether an all singing all dancing colour screen is better for reading ebooks than E ink displays.

For reading any length of time, e-ink is better.

This is really going to be good for newspapers and magazines (once the publishers put out their apps) rather than books.
