Hello,

I was hoping someone on TV could give some insight to my current situation as the Mexican Embassy in Canada isn’t being much help.

I’m planning to go to Mexico in the beginning of March and thus need a visa since I’m Thai.

Currently I’m in Canada with valid permits and no visa. (I let my visa expire because I don’t need one to re-enter Canada via land and at the time it was too much of a hassle to reapply). I currently have a 10 year USA visa. Reapplying for the multi-entry Canadian visa is not an option because I will lose my permits and have to reapply for those, which is more of a hassle.

I need to know if it’s possible to get a Mexican visa from the Mexican consulates in Thailand or the USA while residing in Canada.

The Mexican embassy in Ottawa said I can’t get a Mexican visa from them since my Canadian visa has expired. Flying back to Thailand is not an option, but driving to the USA is.

Neither consulate has returned my calls/emails, only the Canadian one.

4-5 years ago my Thai wife was going to go to Mexico, Ensenada, with my sister and brother in law from Oregon. We live in Thailand. I checked the Mexican Embassy's www site in Bangkok and it looked almost as complicated as getting a U.S. visa, which my wife already had, a 10-year visa.

We flew off to Portland for a week or so. During that time, downtown to the Mexican Consulate there, filled out the form, handed it in. The ConOff was busy so he came out in the hallway to speak to us, my wife and I. Looked at her passport, saw several trips back and forth between Thailand and the U.S., saw the current 10-year visa, and after about 5 minutes, just said to come back in the afternoon to pick up her visa.

That's all, was pretty simple.

So, suggest you email a Mexican consulate near the border and give that a shot. No guaranty, of course, but with a 10-year U.S. visa already in your passport, "should" be OK.

I thought there was some rule that if a U.S. tourist visa holder stays within so many miles of the US border they don't need a visa?

Hmm, I've never heard of that.

I guess it wouldn't matter in my case anyway as I plan to fly to Cancun and stay in Playa Del Carmen.

Yes, the range is just like 50 miles within the border or something... which obviously doesn't include Cancun.
