Khunying Pornthip - Groovy Dr Death

Regarding the acquittal of Noppadon, accused of murdering his brother Hangtong 8 years ago, I see Khunying Pornthip says the prosecution may appeal. To me, Noppadon has always failed to explain why he didn't call an ambulance or the police for over 3 hours after his brother's death.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if this latest development is yet another barrage set up by some of the boys in brown who seem to always conflict with her work.

Update:

Defendant of Hangthong case taking legal actions against Khunying Porntip

The defendant in a controversial murder case of his brother and former Thai Citizen Party MP Hangthong Thammawattana, Mr. Noppadol Thammawattana, has filed a lawsuit against Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan, the acting director of the Institute of Forensic Science, accusing her of giving false testimony. Mr. Noppadol also would like the government to help out the public members who have been mistreated by the state officials.

Mr. Noppadol also filed a lawsuit against Md. Thamrong Chirachariyavej, the physician who also performed Mr. Hangthong’s autopsy with Khunying Porntip. Mr. Noppadol also said he will also take a legal action against the two physicians for giving a false autopsy report of his brother at Nonthaburi Provincial Court. Following the criminal charges, he will file charges against them, demanding over one billion baht of damage. He said he believes his legal actions will act as a criterion for the government to protect people who have been treated badly by the state officials.

The court has accepted his case for consideration, and the plaintiffs will be summoned on May 14th at 9 AM.

I reckon she should be up for a Nobel Prize. She's about as close as Thailand will ever come to a counter-corruption champion. The Kunying title may protect her, but where is a similar leadership shown in going after the corrupt hi-so's? So wshat happened to that girl's rich boyfriend? Or the guy who ran into the crowd at that bus stop?? We all know the answers..just can't say them here! Hey! I know!! UNDP - how about giving her next year's 'lifetime achievement award' to Porntip? Would that be possible?

Wait, let me cc everyone from Bangkok to NYC and see if there are any answers....I'm sure if I just keep working it...

not sure that I care for the 'Dr Death' in the title of this thread.

It relates to 'Dr. Death' Kevorkian (who I think is OK, but the media skewers him because he sell a lot of newspapers).

to Tawps's insightful comment, "There isn't a shortage of smart people. A lot of them are here.

It's a shortage of non selfish people with morals and pure ideological values."

.....I would add; she's not afraid to step up to the plate and do what's right.

So often, Asians in authority know what's right, but rarely do they have the courage to take dynamic action to try and set things right. The premise of "lay low, don't rock the boat, think about career and reputation, worry about recriminations' takes precedence all too often.

legally protecting (and rewarding!) 'whistleblowers' would be a BIG step toward cleaning up Thai bureaucracy.

Try asking virtually any Thai person why this guy Noppadol got off. I wont print the answer here as he would probably sue! It sems to be one thing most Thai people agree on. Lets hope it goes to appeal.

Noppadol seems quite confident, too confident I'd say. He wasn't so confident to call the police when he "discovered" the body.

What would she have to gain by lying along with the other physician she worked with on the case? Nothing.

It's yet another obvious case of a criminal hi-so+ corrupt police force+bad apples remaining in the justice system and helping out.

May this fraud blow up in Noppadol's face and those helping him along get looong jail terms.

The Thai authorities, especially the police, regard her as a nuisance. Her findings in many murder cases often contradict theirs. In some cases she has proved their involvement!

She was also instrumental in getting the murder case of Thai millionaire MP Hangthong Thammawattana reopened. The MP was discovered dead from a gunshot wound and police ruled that he had committed suicide. Her findings, however suggest that the police had concealed evidence. She says: “The position of the gun, the body and the blood stains -- I believe is was murder.” The case was re-opened in 2003 and still has not been resolved. Earlier last month, a man who claims to be an ex-convict, admitted to the crime.

She has received death threats over the case.

No surprise about the death threats. Half or more of the family members have been offed, suicided or disappeared. Of course none of it was criminal, and of course none of it was related to not wanting to share the vast wealth.

His arrogance and conceit knows no bounds. An incredible living example of unashamed ruthlessness and vindictiveness.

The 'man' has no shame!

From Bangkok Post 02/10/07

Justice permanent secretary Jarun Pukditanakul said yesterday that his ministry was still consulting with the Civil Service Commission (CSC) on whether to appoint Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS). Mr Jarun said he needs to carefully look into the proposed appointment of Khunying Porntip as many respected officials do not agree with it.

His office has sought the advice of the CSC on whether senior officials found guilty of a minor disciplinary violation could be appointed to head the CIFS, a position equal to a director-general. Mr Jarun wondered why the institute did not nominate other senior officers who have never faced any disciplinary action. The office of the justice permanent secretary was supposed to nominate Khunying Porntip, now the CIFS acting director, for the job of director before Sept 30, but it did not do so.

Balance of article relates tale of official who claimed a taxi fare from airport but used official car and was subject to dismissal. Attempt to parallel this with the US trip funding which was identified as an administrative error. It's not just the police who don't want her, wonder why? <sigh>.
