Bt43 mn illegal goods destroyed

BANGKOK: -- The Intellectual Property Department and Phuket Police on Monday jointly destroyed 217,686 items of illegal products worth Bt43 million, to show Thailand's serious attempt in cracking down IP violation.

Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot said the the activity should help increase awareness of Thai consumers and tourists to "say no" to illegal products.

During January to October last year, the department reported 6,731 cases of IP rights infringement and seized 5.03 million illegal items, up 75 per cent from the same period in 2008 .

Good to peel the first layer off the infinite onion...

Destroyed? Hmmmm sure the stuff was... :)

Oh no, cost of 'insurance' just went up. You'll have to pay an extra 10baht a DVD now.

Doesn't compute: destroyed 217,686 items, seized 5.03 million items.

Did the rest of the stuff find its way back to the market stalls by itself? :)

:) ....selling price or manufacturing price? The latter is more like 5% of the selling price = Baht 2,15million.

all this stuff is back in the shops in about 30-45 days

I have to agree, it wouldn't surprise if a sizable portion of the supposed 5.03 million seized items get back in the marketplace.

What was seized and where?

Were the items (purportedly) destroyed in an environmentally sound way? recycled? ....or was there a big plastic-burning bonfire?

p.s. there are a number of ways that CD's can be made in to artistic/useful creations.

I would venture the original goods pricing would be 43 mil,

but not the street knock off price.

If they really wanted to stamp out pirated or fake goods they could

Trouble is:

1- 1/2 of Thai stores would be forced to closed

2- Tea money would decrease

Anyone want to hang out at Pantip Plaza?

Yeah, and a Rolex has now gone up 50baht :)

Was the 5.03 million bahts siezed in pirated goods the street value or merely the material costs?
