This Morning One Of The Locals Came Calling

I lived in fear of these things for the 4 years I've been here - having heard many stories of just how awful their bite is!

Saw my first 2 weeks ago - and it was v obviously different to the harmless millipede.

V glad there aren't too many about where I live.

If you chopped them into half they instantly becomes 2 centipedes and still lives.

I usually feed the smallers ones to my arowanas and the bigger ones you can actually eat them which i was taught in jungle suvival but tried just that one time

I will take your word for it, but have no interest in partaking 555. :) I have a flowerhorn (red dragon) I wonder if this would be a little delicacy for him? He likes blood worms.

Small centipedes will definitely be a treat for flowerhorns.

another fact - centipedes are used by certain cultures to treat malaria.

Sorry to disappoint but Phuket's got there fair share. Gf's mother(Chiangmai) got bitten on the hand June last year by one of these fellas. Picked up a piece of wood in a wood pile and sunk it's fangs in. Her hand blew up twice normal size with swelling. She refused to go to a doctor, in the end after about 4 days the pain subsided, but she was in excruciating pain the whole time. Mate(Lamphun) also got bitten on the ass when he jumped in the back seat of an old car he had parked next to the house. His 3 days of pain was more eventful/entertaining, at least for the rest of us.

According to the University of Kentucky this is a myth.

"It is sometimes said that, when cut in half, the two halves of a centipede will grow into two separate centipedes. Although this is sometimes true for certain worm species, it is not true for centipedes or millipedes (although the two halves may wiggle and move for quite a while!)."

Thanks ThaiVisa, now you've got me doing silly things like peering down into my toilet bowl before I sit down.

Does anyone know if these centipedes can also climb up sink pipes?

How exactly do you "close" a shower drain? While I would like to know in order to minimize the possibilities, I would imagine that if these things can climb in drains, they can climb anywhere, probably fit through the cracks of doors(?). I only live on the second floor, and I've got a small patio of sorts (with a closing door, not the sliding type) that has both a sink drain and a floor drain, the latter used by the aircon. Plenty of opportunities that I'd like to decrease. Any good tips?

I think you took my question a little too seriously. When I said any good tips? I meant good ways at reducing possible insect entry, particularly with this venemous type this thread is about. The toilet bowl comment was a bit of a joke. As shower drains (and bathroom pipes?) were mentioned, I asked, what are ways at sealing them? Thanks.

That's not a centipede, THIS is a centipede

Maybe this thread should be in 'pets' :)

Yes this is not a centipede. In french it is called a "scolopendre". Now, may be you can find the english name. I had a lot in my house before the garden was really taking care of. I suppose they destroyed the nests. They are really dangerous. They can kill a big pig........In french : "à bon entendeur, salut!"

Oh, on a similar note. A mate from NY who lives round the corner found that sweetener (you know, that sugar alternative 'orrible stuff) kills ants. Don't need that much of it either (very expensive). Just pour a few sachets around the nest . . . gone!

Do you mean Saccharin?

Thanks for this topic, it's a reminder to not wander outside the house, bare-foot.

My patch is very tiny & I've seen those big centas..... & I thought Aus had some bad crawlies! :)

This one makes my skin crawl even more! (and it's in Penang, not far away!)

I'm okay with snakes and spiders, but scorpions and these kind of giant centipedes freak me out! Maybe it's because we don't have them in Canada?

That video is truly creepy. They freak me out too. Anything with a bunch of little writhing legs does it.
