Again your oven looks great as well as your roast, I love Bar-B-Qued roasteria chicken, made in a small barrel roster I made with a battery powered motor, I brought from the states, best $20. I have ever spent.

My next project will be a Cuban "Caja China" portable roaster.

Impressive! Do you have a photograph of your rotisserie?

And keep us informed of your progress on your caja china box. That might just be the ticket for Thailand. You can host some great parties with something like that (hint, hint! :) ).

Yes I do, It is in rough condition I made and been using it for almost 6 years now, I used a 30 gal steel drum cut it with a sabre saw,

I made the stand out of bolt together metal, and had a friend weld a stainless steel rod together, it holds the chickens on with bamboo large sticks, sold in all Thai stores.

I brought a wireless battery charged motor from the states for $20. uses two D batteries.

and have Bar-B -Qued between a 100- 200 chickens on it, still working great.

I usually get whole roast chickens from tescos or from a stall down the market...I would have a different view if there was some nice paxo stuffin' mix available...

I saw exactly that in Rimping (Chiang Mai) yesterday and salivated for the want of an oven :-( Have to admit though, I love the roast chickens from a man in the market nearby - he has them perfect.

yeah...if you look they usually roast 'em in one of those upright rotisserie contraptions and baste them with a nice sauce as well...

in the Middle East they usually got the roasting chickens on the rotisserie on display out on the sidewalk(pavement), one of the first things I'd look for when in new accommodation on a new assignment; with arabic bread, hommous and salad/garnish the equiv. of about 100 baht takeaway...useta get one about twice a week on the way home from work; chop up the meat and add to additional salad and toss with tahina sauce...with fresh arabic bread, mmmmm, mmmm good :)...I could eat that stuff forever...

I am not fond of the beef here either, and I generally do without. But as chuck tends ot be on the low end of the scale anywhere, and pot roast slow cooks it, I find that it does quite well here with Thai beef. The cut I used cost me 425 baht, whereas in the US it would have cost maybe $4, but last year, I went to the Grand Hyatt Erawan Buffet with its wagyu promotion, so with my total bill for today at maybe 600 baht for two, it worked out pretty well.

Wouldn't a crock pot work really well for pot roast?

My favorite cut is rib eye roast from TOPS. Bon Apetite.

Yes, a crock pot works, but it doesn't get the same carmelization as in an oven.

I needed to replace my well-worn-out toaster oven but when I went to Makro these were on sale and people were putting 3 or 4 of them in a shopping cart... Generally the stuff of late-night television infomercials in the USA but I have found it works like a charm given that I have no kitchen (it is out on the balcony).

BTW my bowl is stainless steel not glass which is maybe why they were on sale.

Coincidently enough, my first attempt at pot roast in Thailand was using one of these at my friend's place for a party.  It failed miserably.  He had had pot roast at my US home and raved about it to our other friends, so they were quite surprised at the tough piece of leather that was finally presented to them.  Next time, I used his regular oven to salvage both our reputations.

Screw the pot roast... It makes great baked potatoes, eggs if you are careful come out like soufflé, and after cooking a pork carnitas in the slow cooker, I brown the shredded meat and it is wonderful. Also great for roasting cashews and almonds. Broiled salmon, etc. All the above with no kitchen... and I don't have to worry about a 220V oven around water.

OK, so you don't like pot roasts!  :)

I do like pot roasts... If I were to make a pot roast here, however, I would first cook it for hours in the slow cooker and then finish it off for browning in the convection oven same as the carnitas thus avoiding the shoe-leather phenomenon.

Dinner last night. Thanks for the inspiration. Despite not being very dark it tasted excellent. My preferred cut of meat would have been rib eye roast but the little TOPS I went to had only tenderloin. So once everything was in the pot I poured EVOO on it salt & ground black pepper.

The potatoes came out undercooked (1 hour at 200) so I microwaved them after. This made 2 full dinners.

Thanks guys. It was delisch.

OK so the Next Monday night.

Found nice local Ribeye roast at Emporium @ around 300 something baht. Bought a nice chunk priced at around 200 baht

Microwaved a potato for 2 minutes to soften it. Loaded the covered casserole with the meat, potato chunks, carrot chunks, onion chunks & whole unpeeled garlic, poured some EVOO over the top , maybe a 1/4 cup.

Baked uncovered for 30 mins, added the cover & bake for a further 30 mins at 200 deg C.

This was so good & I swear I didn't add any salt. It didn't need it. Will get 2 big meals out of this.

Thanks bonobo for showing me the charred version. bon appetit

btw - was crusing the appliance dept at Emporium. 9000 baht ovens on sale for 6000 baht. Worth a look if you need a tabletop oven. Expresso machines deeply discounted too. I love that Cuisinart toaster - discounted to around 3000 bht. LUXURY.

Looks pretty good!

Mine wasn't charred, though.  That carmelized top was the dried Liptons Onion Soup I stuck on top which was then moistened with a pinot noir.

As an update, the oven is great for roasting and baking, but not quite as good for broiling.  I've tried a steak once and pork chops several times, but it doesn't seem to do as well as other ovens I have tried.  I like to marinate pork chops in lemon juice and white wine and broil them for a healthier version of my other pork chop  dishes, but I am having a problem getting the nice browning before the interior is done.

Right! That's it! I am buying an oven just like that.

Couple of questions...Is that electrolux a proper counter top one or is it one of the types that need to be built in? The ones I have seen for sale were to be built into the kitchen cabinets. I was thinking of getting a wooden frame built around one and putting it on the counter top. Would the heat be an issue?

Are those available in Chiang Mai anywhere?

It's not a bad price you paid for an Electrolux.

For what it's worth, here's my oven. That one has been in place for more than a year now. Kitchen is about 8 years old, no problem regarding heat and wood.

Wondering is that a piece of plywood as the barrier between the stove and washing machine ?

Is that adequate for when the oven is hot ?

The outside of the oven barely gets slightly warm.  I put the plywood there to keep the washing machine from getting scrathed.

Yes, this is a built-in model.  I originally had a frame built, but it took up too much room.  I asked the folks at Electrolux, and as I expected, they told me the frame would only be for aesthetics. So I took it down and just left the oven on top of the dishwasher.

POST A PICTURE OF YER OVEN ON THAIVISA.COM NOW...

People post a lot of pictures online, but ThaiVisa has to be one of the few where people are posting pictures of their ovens!!!  :D

That's what I thought, you just put some wood underneath it to protect the surface....Can build a frame for aesthetics...

The search is on!

I'd like that brand, some I've seen were brands unknown to me...

Oh, Anyone with any pointers for buying in Chiang Mai? I checked out Home Pro in Hang Dong, seems the best so far.

I did a lot of research online.  The HomePro/Homeworks had quite a few Italian brands, most unknown to me.  After research, I found out that most of them had been made at two factories in Italy which made sub-par ovens under various names.  The customer complaints on these were numerous.  Electorlux was pretty good in that department, as were some more expensive brands to include other Italian, German, French, and American.  FOr the general price range, the Franke was the only other one which got adequate customer reviews, but I thought the Electrolux gave more oven for the baht.

I've been searching for Electrolux ovens in Chiang Mai. They have a Thai website saying there are "Electrolux Home Centres" around Thailand and have a branch in Chiang Mai. Has anyone seen this shop? I can't read Thai and my wife can't find anything either...

For the price, I would prefer the known brand.

TIA. (just looking at muffin recipes to whet my appetite!)
