My Thai boyfriend and I are trying to plan for him to come to my country (Canada), but I'm confused as to what has to happen with the army service. He's going in May to draw..is there no way out of this? We were hoping to be in Canada in a by this time next year....not over 2 years from now.

Also, has anyone gone through the process of coming from Thailand to Canada? I think we can get him on a extended visitors permit and then apply for a P.R. card while he's here, but not sure how difficult any of that is actually going to be.

Thanks!

I'll reply to your post to bump it so hopefully someone that knows the answer can respond.

How old is you bf and what does he do?

I got exempt from service because of my level of education.

I was living in Canada for a few years but never bothered to do the paperwork for immigration. Didn't want a Canadian citizenship actually, but now I regret not getting it.

The other Thais I knew got their citizenship pretty easily. They were on a student visa, then got their PR, then their citizenship, then moved back to Thailand. :)

As well, did your bf never attend Lor Dor? If he did, he would be exempt from service.

I don't know of anyone who actually had to serve come to think about it.

It's pretty easy to get out of if A. you attended Lor Dor, or B. you're in school.

This was 21 years in the making. It shouldn't be a surprise for him. That's why most of us attend Lor Dor...

He is 22 going to be 23 in May.

He's been working since he was 10 years old and now runs a bar. He has no education really at all...that's why I'm not sure if there is a way to get out of it, or if it's just something he's going to have to do depending on the draw...
