Does that mean they are great in Smoke on the water and Lady in Black...or are they great in more sophisticated Rock?

That's usually what you hear on Samui. Must be that's what they think that people want to hear. Some of the bands come off a lot better when someone convinces them to ditch the "tourist rock" and to play something else. For instance, even Black Roses is pretty good when they play their early set at Penny Lane. For that they tend to play older stuff that is less often covered by competing bands. Probably they play the same set every time that they play there, but at least the first time you hear it it's a better than usual.

those were the days, far better than the crap you hear all around the island now days, although i also loved Rocky Bay what a setting for a party that was, knocks the hel_l out of the crappy lake view. always remember hundreds of bikes heading to rocky bay, park the bike up make a mental note where you left the bike only to come out and find the car park guy had moved them all.

There's always Ritchie Newton

not forgetting Mr coconut

As in "I've got a luverly bunch of coconuts". You have to sing it!!! :)

No, Mr. Coconut was the stage name of Edgar Murray. He wrote a couple of novelty songs about the island and adopted the goofy name. That was unfortunate in the sense that it often caused him to be viewed as a joke rather than as a troubadour. You used to be able to hear him once per week at the Spinger singing Stones songs acoustically.

A relatively good band played last evening at the school's end concert at Buddy's/Lamai.

It was crowded with Thais, many school children. BTW, there was a well known Thai comedy group, which ridiculed Farangs by saying hey you farang, can speak Thai? 1000 Baht and Farang like Thailand hoi aroy, that kind of stuff. Lots of laughters anyway, high prices for F&B, probably to cover for the costs.
