Pad Airport Seizure: Prosecutors Postpone Case Again ...

Featured Replies

The Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) on Wednesday postponed the airports seizure case for another month as requested by key leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), citing "security concerns amid rising political temperatures."

Prosecutors were scheduled on Wednesday to decide whether or not to indict nine PAD leaders, who spearheaded the royalist yellow-shirt protesters to seize Bangkok's main Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports. All were charged with "illegally gathering of more than ten persons to incite chaos and law violation."

A lawyer representing the PAD leaders - including Sondhi Limthongkul and Chamlong Srimuang - however, asked prosecutors to postpone the case again, reasoning that his clients were "on duty in upcountry." He also raised "concern over the safety of the accused, due to the current political circumstances."

In 2008, tens of thousands of yellow-shirt protesters staged marathon mass protests in Bangkok that culminated in the airport blockade in late November.

The PAD's 8-day-long airport closure left more than 300,000 passengers stranded. The blockade was lifted only in early December after Thailand's constitution court disbanded the ruling "People Power Party", automatically toppling the government of Somchai Wongsawat, who they accused of being a proxy of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The prosecution team today readily agreed to defer the case to April 22nd as "papers concerning the case are yet to be completed."

I have a feeling on April 22, Sondi & Chamlong will have a round of golf or massage booked for the same day and so the trial will be delayed again. No doubt they will face the full force of Thai justice when they can fit it into their hectic schedule.

Yea, saw this reported soon after noon today on the other newspaper website. I thought it highly moronic, they're too busy to be held accountable.

typical... :)

Apologies, I'll post a TV friendly, anti- Thaksin rant to make up for it.

^ thats the spirit :)

Good to see PAD-leaders being held accountable for their actions, so often people claim that they're not & haven't been charged, but the frustration caused by the slow speed of Thai justice is also understandable.

On the other hand, this more-recent case is still going ahead, however slowly, unlike all the older ones against Thaksin which are simply stalled, due to his continued voluntary absence.

Double standards indeed. :)
