Where To Find A Dvd Recorder?

Hi

I'm having trouble being able to find a dvd recorder that has a hard drive. Had a good look around Central Lad Phrao, which has a Power Buy, and had no luck. There is quite a variety of them in Australia but obviously not that popular in Thailand. Any information on where to find one would be great.

Cheers

My dvd recorder languishes on a shelf under the TV as I now use a Dreambox 7020

satellite receiver with builtin hard disk.

So much simpler than having to programme the satellite receiver AND the DVDR.

As a True Visions subscriber, is it possible to remove the receiver they supply and replace with a Dreambox?

On the subject of DVD recorders (both with hard drive and without), i too, like the OP, am finding them hard to come by. Seems they have disappeared from the shelves. Anybody know where in Bangkok one can be bought? Powerbuy, HomePro, Tesco and all the other outlets that used to sell them, now don't - at least the ones in my area.

I have a Pioneer DVR but it has largely been superceded by my Dreambox 7020 which currently has a 160Gb disc installed.

Thanks astral.

So is it possible to simply unplug my True Visions receiver box and replace with a Dreambox like yours?

I just ordered the DVR from True....seems to be very similar to a Tivo back in the US? I'll know next week!

I think you mean PVR. What are you paying? If i recall correctly it's about 10,000 baht for the machine and then a monthly payment of a few hundred. Cost of machine seems reasonable but the ongoing monthly payments seems a bit unnecessary. Hence my question to Astral - if a Dreambox can be plugged in to the True Visions set up and do the same job as PVR, wouldn't Dreambox be better?

Yep, you are right. It is a PVR. Cost is 9,900B during this promo and for now, 200B/month. I think the normal rate is 300B/month.

I have heard nothing but great things about the Dreambox. I hope to get one at some point in the future!

As I understand it the PVR's offered by companies like True, only allow you to record and then play back programmes.

There is no way to archive data, in the digital medium, i.e. DVD, in the way you can with a DVR.

The Dreambox has a web interface. So you just connect it to the home LAN and access it via

your web browser. You can then copy programmes across to your home computer and write to DVD.

I am not in Thailand so I cannot say if the Dreambox works with True, but I see no reason why it should not.

I inquired this morning of a True rep and was told they no longer offer the recorder mentioned above. I had noticed it is not advertised anywhere in the current issue of Premier Magazine.

The last place I saw a legit programmable tv recorder was in a shop in Cental Lardprao on what I think was the 4th floor - it was by Sony at that time (about a year ago) it was going for around 14000 - 15000 baht.

Also asked a rep at Power Buy in MBK yesterday and he suggested they have portable HDD made for this purpose to copy the tv program and then transfer it to your cpu. They did not have one in stock though.

Would love to copy a lot of the older Thai music on the MaJung channel on UBC which is unavailable in shops these days except for the occasional album with a variety of songs. Don't particularly care for todays Thai music, too much Western Influence for my tastes.

I fear the the DVR has been superceded by the PVR but without the backup facility?

I am still waiting on the latest info on the PVR from True....................

The Dreambox, really is a Dream!! :)

I will keep you posted once I get my hands on a HD PVR box here in the Middle East.

I am no expert in this field but I will tell you what I have and this may assist you.

I have a media player with 2 terabite hard drive in it. This allows me to store movies, music , photos etc. and also to record television shows. I have the media player connected to my television with a hdmi cable. I did have a 160 gb dvd recorder in my home country but what I have now is infinitely better in my opinion.

I can connect the media player to the internet and download shows direct to the hard drive. Media player also has a usb port at the front which is very handy. Comes of course with a remote control and is very easy to set up.

Must be easy to set up because I did it myself :D and remember I am not an expert in this field.

Media player cost around 5000 baht and the hard drive was 6000 baht. So a total of 11000 baht and believe me I am very very happy with the unit and what it can do.

Hope this helps you.

I have a philips that I don't use that I'd be willing to part with.  Don't remember all the details but I could fish it out if you want. Think it's 120Gb or so.

will that work with my true sat.?? Their newest is 9,900 bht. plus you have to pay every month?

Thanks for the advice, but at that time (5 months ago) i was trying to find an alternative to the PVR system from True Visions. I couldn't find anything though and did end up getting PVR.

A DVR will work with any Satellite receiver.

Just connect it with the Red/Yellow/White cable.

The bugbear is having to programme both the Sat Recvr and the DVR to record a programme. :bah:

Cheers for the info Astral.

Back on the subject of DVD recorders, i did another search of all my local electronic outlets and can confirm they have completely disappeared from the shelves. Why, i don't know.

Obvious really - they're obsolete. Manufacturers move on, Blue Ray recorders are being pushed now, and it won't be long before they're replaced with solid state flash recorders. Just look at how far SD flash cards have gone, 2TB now! : http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/sdxc

That's equivalent to over 400 DVD's!!

Doesn't seem obvious to me. Blue Ray recorders haven't been out long and i'm not even sure if they have hit the shelves in Thailand yet - Blue Ray players sure, recorders i have yet to see - If they are on the market here, they would be a lot more expensive than DVR machines which were being sold until recently from about 10,000 baht, before they disappeared. They are by the way still easily available in all high street electronic shops in the UK.

Here's the latest Sharp model: http://www.comfever.com/news/audio-video/12697080352926, but all the major manufacturers have models available in Thailand ;)

Great. Still doesn't explain why DVR machines vanished from the shelves in Thailand. They haven't in the UK. Price difference between DVR machines and Blue Ray recorders is great. Would be like LCD TVs disappearing overnight and double / triple the price LED TVs taking their place.

Flash cards would make more sense.

The OP was asking for a recorder with a Hard Disk, presumably for short term

recording, - time shifting?

Paying out for BR disks to throw away is not cost effective.

Also I wonder how long BR recorders will be around before the film

industry has them banned.

Remember DAT, a high quality audio medium, that disappeared because it was too good. :bah:
