Trivia Question Of The Day - How Big Is A Hong?

Featured Replies

I know about rai and ngan and talang wah etc. But the term 'hong' is used a lot in the Krabi region when describing land areas, and Google is NOT my friend on this question :)

Out of interest, is this term in common use in other areas of Thailand? I've only met with it in the Krabi region.

Simon

It must be a district dialect/slang because i have not heard it before anywere else in Thailand....below is a good chart for reference.

:) ...almost as long as getting the metric system introduced in the UK....

My 'hong' is around 6m x 4.5m including the 'hong-nam', but this is not in Krabi, so excuse me if I am generalising a local dialect sort ot thing.

It varies from person to person... but it's not the size that matters

Open caves in huge rocks at sea in the Krabi/Phangnga region are called "Hongs".

^ That'd be 'room' then, as in cave rooms.

Either way, I'm sure the OP can get it converted to standard Thai units. In the end the land office will do the transfer, and land papers still go in tarang wa and rai. So I don't really see the issue, other than when informally talking about land.
