Anyone who is worried about whether a local telephone call is gonna break the bank (or has to even ask the question) sounds like he / she should be in the Oz band 'dire straights' :)

Thai payphones are spiteful and vindictive. I've never won an argument with one yet. Go to an internet cafe and make your call from there. A lot safer and less stressful. :)

You can make a call to anywhere in thailand for 1 baht .. you may only get 15 seconds before your cut off.. but its handy if you are in an emergency situation.

Internet cafe Better?... sure but not what the op asked. Also I must be the lucky one, I have been here for close to 10 years and I have only run into two phones that didn't work. True I haven't tried that many but was always able to find one that worked and wasn't greasy when I needed one.. That being said with the flu on the rise... purex should be used after talking on one.
