If this New Thread can avoid all of the already discussed historical, cultural, socioeconomic and political corruption reasons for Thailand's troubles; I believe I have discovered a root cause, a large hurdle so to speak, which would require a major shift to open a road to stability; a culture of inurement.

in·ured also en·ured, in·ur·ing also en·ur·ing, in·ures also en·ures To habituate to something undesirable, especially by prolonged subjection; accustom: "Though the food became no more palatable, he soon became sufficiently inured to it" (John Barth).

I have concluded the Thais are having too much FUN to change. It's all they have known for 80 years and all they will know for the next 100.

How can I explain this? Let's pretend you came up with a solution for 3 motor bike gangs to live in peace. You give one all the pot business, the other all the cocaine, the other all the hooker trade. Peace and harmony, right? They would look at you and say, but where's the part we can RUMBLE!?

Some people, very mistakenly, call the apolitical in Thailand 'the Silent Majority; WRONG. They are The Mute Majority. The apolitical in Western democracies the not so Silent Majority are catered too and wooed. They have great influence on who gets elected to drive the agenda. In Thailand, The Mute Majority let's drunks drive the family cars. They will stand firmly behind whoever comes out on top.

In a POLL, 70% of Thais claimed they were neither Red OR Yellow. That would be enough to form a White Shirt Movement to pour into the streets and drown out any Red OR Yellow marches or airport attacks.

Now the question is what causes this apathy? Is it the virtue of Buddhism of 'acceptance'? OR Maybe it is that most Thais can, not that long ago, retrace their heritage to slavery [corvees] and they don't think they have a 'right' to have a say?

If only 30% are neither Red and Yellow, my guess that would break down to 11% Yellow and 19% Red. It's amazing that such small minorities can be so LOUD and drive Thailand into the ditches!

Sondhi states if things in Thailand don't continue to go HIS way, his next move will be "to get all of the rich Thais to withdraw monies from banks to destroy the economy." HE said, "the airport takeover was just a warning, to show what he is capable of."

Thaksin might be real scoundrel, on top of the corruption he orchestrated WITH Thaksin to forgive HIS billions in debt.

Sondhi is a perfect example of what I mean by the Mute Majority. They have LET him be their little dictator for the past decade, from his bank rolling of Thaksin into power, to his raid on the airport, to his banning of 111 elected politicians and so on.

Thais are INURED to to the likes of Thaksin and Sondhi.

Their lack of action, their lack of involvement, their apathy, their lack of forming a White Shirt Movement, is costing Thailand Trillions!!!

If they could find a back bone, to oust the Reds and the Yellows, Thailand would have a chance. I don't think they should expect Divine Intervention. They would not understand that if it was fed to them, anyway. [smile nod head - now go away Vishnu] Apathy of the masses could be Thailand's biggest, root, problem.

Your explicandum is to see a political environment dominated by two minority-interest groups. Your concept is that 'fun' by the Thais provides them with a relaxed uninterest in the political environment. Your plea is that 'if only' the mute majority would stand up and be counted then all would be well.

I disagree conceptually. In the West, the upper echelons have utilised polling technology to damage and marginalise groups (of minorities) calling for change by noting the lack of support by the silent majority. My position is this: why should someone with no interest in an issue and a vague dislike of what is going on be able to overrule by sheer numbers those with passionate and full views?

The marketplace of ideas is stacked enough in the upper elite's favour. Structuring the system to allow this 'mute majority' more say simply ensures the elite's further dominance. It brings some hope that this is not yet the case here. But it is already begining to happen. The press have increasingly spoken of the silent majority and this will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If this message succeeds (always a message ploughed by conservative forces) then the land-grab of the elite will succeed.

You have invented points I did not make, then say you disagree with those, your, points?

I don't expect to see Thailand dominated by 2 minority groups as a 'prediction'. It is my observation that is what is occuring now and over the past so many years. 30% of the population is dominating 100% of the politics. It's do see, not to see.

I clearly did not refer to Mute Majority in using the term 'fun' and even provided an example, the biker gangs, in an attempt to avoid this type of Reply. It's reds and yellows that have it their blood to continue these cycles, THEY like to rumble. The emotion for the Mute Majoriy is apathy, not fun, stay off to the sidelines.

Yes, if [if is the biggest word in the dictionary], if Someone organised the majority, who don't favor the reds or the yellows, Thailand would then have a chance.

However, I cleary don't 'see' this as a probability. no no no... Vishnu would have to come to earth or some similar unbelievable ACT.

If this was a few decades ago, parliament would have been suspeneded with a General running the country as PM, instead of from a back room. It may come to that, even though, in this day and age, they don't want the World perception of that kind of outcome.

Perhaps Thai people are inured to the politcal situation.........where they await the outcome and make the best of it.......maybe they are inured to making the best of life whatever it may throw at them....... :)

dave2,

I have to thank you, exceedingly for your comment. It comes at a time when I was beginning to question the detailed calculations of my astrologer and numerologist. I will pass on your complements to them.

I was wondering if was something along those lines, you are getting to gistof the OP, or maybe it is lack of a feeling of entitlement?

[The inurement refers to all parties, for the majority it manifests itself in a stay out of the way approach, for the reds and yellows, they somehow got ingrained with 'I was born to rumble' attitude.]

Whatever it is making the vast numbers of good, hard working, honest and happy Thais stay out of it, it is not proving profitable for Thailand.

Like him, or not, the present PM was off to expand trade with Australia. This might seem like small potatoes in today's headlines, but it IS the big issue!!!

If the white shirts saw enough of better jobs being robbed from them, maybe they would flood the streets and wash out this red parade, then go wash the yellows out of the cat bird seat, too. [no i don't think this will happen, just trying to prove a point]
