Registering A Car? Non-imm (ed) Visa?

Featured Replies

Non immigrant (ED) visas... can I register a car in my name with one?

The rules for registering a car state a non-immigrant visa, passport and proof of address certificate is all that is required, but I can't see anywhere if the type of non-imm is relevant. The language school I applied to learn at said it wasn't possible but I'd like someone to confirm or dispel this. I wish to study here for some years but want a car so I can get around.

Thanks in advance for any help.

As far as I know indeed any non immigrant, including the ED type is accepted for registering a car.

In Pattaya registering a vehicle just on a tourist visa is also possible! The main paper required seems to be the confirmation of your address issued by the immigration office,

Most offices will ask for a Non Imm visa, and the Ed version should be fine.

I just bought a new car and my NON-ED was not a problem. As stated, any NON immigration visa is fine.

Your school told you "it's not possible" simply because they didn't know the answer. Get use to this as the longer you are in Thailand you will hear no, don't have, can not simply because they don't want to tell you they don't know the answer.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I have been living in Thailand many years already and know the score about getting bogus answers from Thais who can't admit to not knowing.

My girlfriend rang the Dept of Land Transport and they told her that a tourist visa with proof of address and passport was NOT sufficient. I am considering studying for a year to get the visa to register a car and also to stay in Thailand for a year.

All the replies have been great. I don't want to shell out 700,000 for a car that I can't register, so can anyone tell me how I can confirm 100% that an ED visa is enough? Are there any good lawyers who truly know?

Thanks again all.

so can anyone tell me how I can confirm 100% that an ED visa is enough?

As I said in my previous post I just recently purchased a car with a NON-ED Visa - actually I've purchased 2 cars in the past on NON-ED visa and all registered in my name. The DLT just said you can't do it on a Tourist visa which is not the same as a NON immigrant visa.

BTW - I've also purchased a motorbike using a NON-ED and registered in my name, so that is 3 vehicles over the years on a NON-ED without any problems.

Thanks OccamsRazor. I appreciate the info.

Because TIT and because different admin clerks use different rules depending on mood and location, I will get my girlfriend to ring Dept of Land Transport main office in Bangkok and speak to a boss to confirm the ED visa is OK before I go out and pay 700,000.

I wonder if the main office of DLT will confirm it in writing in case my local DLT try to use a different set of rules?

By the way, when I buy the car, do I have to go with the owner to DLT to change then name BEFORE I hand over my cash? (I will be paying in cash for a better price so don't want to take any chances.)

Thanks again,

If you buy a new car, the dealer should take care oif the registration for you.

I bought a bike when I was on an ED visa - not an issue.

Just a suggestion: In case you haven't already got a Thai drivers licence, good time to do it; had to get the proof of residence from Immigration to change the bike ownership, so i asked for two as one is required for your licence also (photocopies not acceptable).
