Best Government Hospital In Cm

Recommended Posts

For some years I have been using Sri Racha hospital for all family needs, unless there's something very urgent.

It's a government hospital, however in this part of Thailand it stands out in terms of the quality of medical services. They have state of the art equipment for everything and know how to use it properly, the board certificed specialists (there are many of them) all speak excellent English, the doctors bedside manner is excellent, and they are good listeners and encourage discussion (both Thai and farang patients).

The admin staff are caring, treat all patients with care and respect. Costs (anything on top of the 30Baht, now actually free of course) are extremely low.

Is there s a similar government hospital in the CM city area?

Appreciate your comments.

(Sri Racha is halfway between Chonburi City and Pattaya.)

Since my in-laws are retired military and have govt insurance, we take them to Suan Dok (Chiangmai U. Medical School hospital). We pay a little extra (a few to several hundred baht more) and use the Sri Pat clinic to get appointments and seeing the teaching doctors/surgeons rather than waiting in line with 327 of our closest friends and neighbors in the public clinic.

Things are changing over at Suan Dok. They are going in the direction of semi-privatization sometime this year. This was discussed in this forum previously. Gone will be the days of 30 or 300 Baht medical care or 3000 Baht surgery for Thais. They have been consistently losing money for ages.

I don't know about government employees or retired government employees, soldiers, etc. but from what I was told by a nurse that I know who works there, those government employees were/are the main culprits of the abuse and corruption which has been causing the losses.

Suan Dok ( Maharaj Nakorn chiangmai) is excellent hospital but you need to be able to communicate in thai and have plenty of time to waste on doctor visit.

The cost is the same as other govenment hospitals in thailand, extremely low.

This is abit off topic but It is very true what Elektrified said the government officers abuse the government insurance.

All government employees are entitled to get medical service from the government hospital for free and they can access all medical procedure as well as original (imported) medication for free. Obviosly those tablets are rediculous expensive for example, Pariet ( for GERD/severe gastric /duodinal ulcer) cost about 50-60 baht/tablets while generic omeprazole made by GPO costs less than one baht per tablets. Thai Kharachakarn (Govt. employees) will not use omeprazole even though the diagnosis was just simple gastritis, they would request the doctor to prescribe pariet. Many of them go to different hospital fake the symptoms and get prescribed original tablets then sell them to private chemists. Last week I found that there was an advertisement,on a well known thai website, for buying original tablets from patients. A few weeks ago, the government sued 18 government employees for abusing goverment insurance and one found guilty a few days ago.( he went to 4 hospitals in one month and get prescribed the same original medication)

I have used Sripat since March 2003, extensively. The doctors all speak English. I don't speak 10 words of Thai. Once I waited an hour to see my professor specialist. My usual wait is 10 to 20 minutes. I often waited over 30 minutes to pay $90 in Houston. Drugs are cheap.

Sripat Clinic on 13th floor, Sripat Building, Suan Dok Hospital is without doubt the best Government facility in Chiangmai. The time you wait depends on the doctor's speciality you need. To see an orthopaedic specialist or a surgeon usually takes a few minutes; the medical clinic takes hours! But all the doctors speak English, and are, as far as we innocent patients can judge, the best in Chiangmai (possible exception: Ram, which is private, and anyway has many of the same doctors).

To use the public clinics on the ground floor, you need to be a masochist.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated. Would appreciate if someone could please quote the full address of the Suan Dok hospital.

Thanks again.

You don't need a full address, but it's generally known to Thais as Maharaj Hospital... on Suthep Road before you reach Wat Suan Dork.

Driving west from the moat, on the right hand side about 200 meters in, you will the EMERGENCY sign. We go in the drive way/road 25 meters east of that. The check in lobby for the Sripat is off that road, the general public check in in the lobby on the emergency driveway side.

Any tourist map showing the moat most likely has the hospital on it.

Check in at the door facing the moat.

Has it moved then, PB? Last time I went, which admittedly was a year ago, it was still on 13th floor. I don't live in Chiangmai any more, but would like to know the right place in case I need it again (also I'd prefer not to misinform TV members!).

If checking in for registering, enter the Sripat building from the side that faces Suan Dok Gate, rather than the side facing Doi Suthep. If you have your appointment, proceed to your floor, usually 13th.

Thanks again for all the great information which is much appreciated.

I'm trying to get my act together before I move my family to CM permanently, and I need to say thanks for all the great advice and sharing about a number of topics, often quite detailed, which has been forthcoming from CM members.

In fact you reinforce the reasons why my family want to relocate to CM.

My thanks.
