Motorists warned as building set to start in Lat Phrao area

BANGKOK: -- Motorists are advised to avoid Lat Phrao intersection on Vibhavadi Rangsit road as construction crews for a flyover project will move in tonight with heavy machinery, deputy Bangkok governor Samart Ratchapolsitte said.

Traffic at the intersection and adjacent areas will worsen from June 15 onwards when traffic lanes are closed to allow construction which will last about five months, he said.

Three flyovers will be built under the 454.8-million-baht project. The first, 471 metres long, connects the outbound route of Vibhavadi Rangsit road, starting from Chit Pochana restaurant and ending at the PTT Co building.

The second, 428m long, also on the outbound Vibhavadi Rangsit route, starts from Chit Pochana and ends at Central department store. The third flyover, 542m in length, begins at the Vibhavadi Rangsit inbound route at Central department store and has two exits, one in the St John University area and another at the old Morchit bus terminal.

Mr Samart said the city administration will put up signs on other roads to warn motorists of construction work and advise them to switch to alternative routes while they still can. There will also be leaflets to advise motorists about alternative routes.

Police from Bang Sue station asked Unique Engineering and Construction, the construction firm, to return the road surface during the relocation of underground infrastructure by 5am.

Police also urged authorities concerned to ask the operator of Don Muang tollway to extend the toll reduction period which will end on June 22.

Pol Maj-Gen Phanu Kerdlarpphol, commander of the Traffic Police, said between 10-15 police will be deployed to direct traffic during rush hours. However, he said it is best for motorists to avoid the intersection, if possible, to alleviate traffic which may come to a standstill.
