It is always a little sad to hear these constant stories of people paying often thousands of dollars to these "job brokers" who promise various types of high-paying employment in foreign countries and so often in the best of circumstances provide some low-paying type of employment and in the worst cases traffic people into the sex-industry.

A while back there was the story about some farmers from Issan who paid thousands to some job broker who promised them they would make a bundle picking wild berries in Sweden. When the workers got there, they were just turned loose in the forests to find and pick berries on their own and what they could get for their baskets of berries was nowhere near what had been promised and not even close to what they had paid to be placed in the job. [Can you imagine any more curious looking than groups of Issan natives wandering around the Swedish countryside picking berries for a living?]

Another sad point is that a lot of the funds were likely borrowed from loan-sharks at high interest that will likely never be paid off...that might not be very health for them.

The loan sharks and 'agents' are probably one and the same. Just a thought

There are plenty of similar con-men and swindlers in Pattaya who prey upon gullible farangs promising them a U.K. travel visa for their bar-girl girlfriends.

For an upfront 'fixing' fee of 30,000 baht (non returnable in small print).

They were. And are, they are at it again this year. They have just changed the name of the Thai company doing the search for people. Which is part-owned by the Swedish company buying the berries from the pickers.

When the Thais arrive in Sweden they are told they have to pay for their very primitive accomodation and for petrol and transport every day to the picking areas. And in a year when there are not much berries, like last year, their earnings can sometimes be less than what they are forced to pay. And they have to pay the plane tickets in the first place. It is a disgrace.
