I now have a job and need to get a Work Visa, so my boss can get a work Permit.

I was told that in the last few months it has changed and you have to return to your own country to get a work visa. surely this is not right. I would not give the idea any credit except it came from a normally reliable source

My understanding is I take 47 photos 3kgs of paper work and go to where ever the cheapest flight goes - singapore, penang, KL.

I am British and 45 years old.

Just to add to the confusion I have a brand new passport that does not have the old visa in it, but I assume if I take the old passport with me it will be OK.

There is no work visa and the information you were told is indeed not correct. The question is what kind of visa are you now on.

if you currently not hold a non-immigrant visa you have to go to the labour ofice first and apply for the WP. When everything is in order labour will give you a wp3 form, wich you need to apply for a non-immigrant visa in a neighbouring country (you also need a letter from your employer asking for a visa for you and take your contract with you to be sure).. When you have the visa and return to Thailand you go back to labour and get the WP.

You have to go to immigration to transfer your permission to stay to the new passport. It doesn't take long and is free. Just make a copy of your old and new passport and TM-card.

Will be single entry visa first time around, but can obtain multiple entry visa later when work permit is available (or alternatively obtain extension of stay based on employment from Thai immigration if you meet the requirements).
