Som Tam Sukhumvit

Soi 1 at night.

I stopped eating som tam palaar (mud fish) after spending a couple of miserable weeks on my back and in hospital with a parasite - from raw fish - likely to have been either som tam palaar or larp plaar. The hospital specialist told me that the public water supply in Issaan is dosed with Praziquantel specifically to stop this being a major public health issue. That's not much use to us falangs that drink filtered water!

Sorry - I'm being a party pooper aren't I!

Had some good som tam the other day from a lady on Sukhumvit right about Soi 17.

As for avoiding the issues with fish and crab, you can specify "som tam Thai" as opposed to "som tam pla" or "som tam poo." I much prefer the former one as opposed to the latter two.

Interesting concept about the "best" som tum.

I asked my isaan gf and she reminiscent nostalgically about some lady that used to make it in a certain corner of ubon a decade ago... my assumption is that is was that it must have used the oldest possible fermented fish, rotting land crabs, and foulest fish sauce to create the best possible mix for her tastes :) .

That being said, some som tum thai I've had has been really good... I've always imagined that a milder farang version with big fresh shrimp in it or cooked sea crab would be quite tasty. It's best combination would be on a vietnamese sandwhich, which i believe i ate once in phnom penh. Khmer som tum... now that's a subject i doubt anyone here knows about?
