Security heightened at bus terminals during Songkran

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Ministry of Transport has heightened the security at all bus terminals and transportation hubs nationwide to ensure safety for travelers during the Songkran Festival.

Speaking after inaugurating a temporary passenger protection center, Deputy Minister of Transport Suchart Chokchaiwattanakorn said the 4 offices were located at Mo Chit Bus Terminal, Ekamai Terminal, the Southern Terminal, and the Department of Land Transport.

The ad hoc center is open from now until 12 April 2010 to receive complaints from commuters traveling during the upcoming Songkran holidays in case they are treated unfairly by transport service providers or witness any inappropriate acts. The passengers can file their complaints via the center’s hotline 1584, 24 hours a day.

Director General of the Land Transport Department Chairat Sa-nguansue added that the authority had stepped up security at all bus terminals to prevent possible instigation of chaos. Officers have been instructed to run frequent patrols, looking out particularly for suspicious objects in the areas.

This year, the Transport Ministry has tightened up the drunk driving regulations. All bus drivers will be checked for alcohol every 200 kilometers, and if their breath alcohol level is above zero, they will be immediately replaced and have their license confiscated.
