Is Incompetence Genetic?

The abortive attempt to clear the reds leads to 20 or so dead. The army does a half ass job and then pulls back. I certainly deplore the killings but it was all so inevitable. The Thai military/security forces are led by incompetent gangsters who couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery let alone control tens of thousands of people. It's not a question of supporting the red shirts or not although I do think that in many countries the total corruption of Thailand which offers no prospects to the poor masses would have resulted in violent revolution many moons ago. What is so very sad is the real lack of ability of the elites to deal with this crisis in any innovative way. On top of that if you intend using deadly force make sure your 'enemy' knows about the real intent well before you open up with live rounds. Maybe they would have dispersed beforehand if they had known etc.

The bottom line of all this is the utter predictability of it all. People killed, army pulled back (in for a penny in for a pound I say; 19 or 39 killed makes no difference to the Thais and maybe it would have ended there), Absit on TV making his apologies but vowing to stand firm. I think many of us could have scripted how this would pan out. Cue much more mayhem to come and perhaps the terminal blow to the Thai tourist industry. The only silver lining for them is that we are coming into the low season. I really do despair at times for Thailand and its people and am sad to say I am beginning to believe that the Thai people may be genetically predisposed to incompetence. It's everywhere in this society but finds its inspiration at the very top.
